Bring in your accomplishments to the table, how you've grown, and how you've helped the agency's business.
But beware, most agencies will do a 3-5% raise based on performance. Being promoted and/or jumping ship to a new agency is how you'll really get that bigger salary.
Case in point, I went from $85k to $130k by leaving my mid-level role and jumping to a tech company as a senior
Yeah I hear that. Creatives probably don’t leave for many reasons, but if it’s a location outside NYC that’s probably a big part of it. If you’re already at the best shop around, where would you go to get a counter offer anyway. At least you’re at a great shop though, you’ll be able to recoup, though I know still not pleasant!
In many workplaces, your manager is required to submit a case for your pay increase/title bump. It’s exactly what it sounds like and often formalized in a structured document - “so and so set forth to accomplish XYZ did so in ABC fashion. They have excelled in all roles & responsibilities outlined for their level. Their noteworthy successes were X, Y, and Z projects” etc. The best tactical thing you can do aside from the interpersonal part of being cool with your manager, is making it REALLY easy for them to submit that case on your behalf. Make a list of your wins and don’t be shy. Remind them of all the great stuff you’ve done and ways in which you’ve grown.
No one will advocate for you quite like yourself, so make it super turnkey for you manager to speak with the level of conviction re: your worth.
Accepting low pay to be a team player was a sucker move. You'll spend years getting that back. Strong work and a good attitude sound like table stakes. First lose the word "fight." A pay raise is a business decision. You guys are not friends. You need to rationalize why it is a good business decision to keep you and give you more money. Creatives (I was a copywriter) often make the mistake of not really understanding the business they are in. If your work isn't getting made, it may not be that good or at least the client or your boss doesn't think it's good. If your work keeps not getting made, then you are sucking money out of the company with no return and you should actually be worried about KEEPING your job not getting a raise. Want a raise? Make yourself indispensable.
