Manager is not the title for generalist track unless you purposely hid that for some reason. If it’s SBU (Speciality Business Unit) I would not take it as most none generalist people at BCG are somehow treated as second class. It’s less cutthroat as the up or out in the generalist side but also it means your career progression won’t be as fast.
This was the role but I’m not pursuing it any further:
BCG Platinion | Manager, Tech Advisory and Delivery
I'd take it. People manager roles are very hard to come by at Google. You already have the Google brand, so it will be easier for you to return to Google or go elsewhere in tech later at a higher level.
You will likely earn lower wages on a $/hour basis, but 2 years of management experience should be worth it.
The fact that you even applied to BCG and got through the interviews means that the WLB factor doesn’t phase you so I wouldn’t worry too much about that.
I would make sure you’re not joining their Plantion org bc that is just Google cloud consulting with stricter OKRs.
If you make the move, make sure it’s strategic and fits your long term vision. “BCG” is a vague title the same way that “Google” is. There are nuances to the firm once you join.
Pro
1. How long have you been at Google?
2. What have your ratings been?
3. Have you explored transfers or rotations internally?
4. Why wouldn’t you be able to negotiate for higher salary with BCG?
5. Are you willing to take worse WLB for similar or less comp?
See point 5. - very true!
It sounds like a non client facing role since manager isn’t our title for managers and 190k isn’t our base salary for managers. If it is an internal role as I suspect, take the Google job. We work our internal folks hard and the career progression is minimal.
I’d say stay at google if wlb matters to you. You won’t get as much free food and perks at BCG and your hours are likely to go up so in all your pay would be less on an hourly basis and as it pertains to perks and food that you will now pay out of pocket for. Also depends on your long term career goals. Don’t take it for granted that you can just “come back to” Google whenever. It’s hard to get a job at this company regardless, unless you literally know of someone with headcount that will hold it specifically for you. Like if your have a phenomenal relationship with your manager and have proven the value you bring to the team and they don’t think they can easily get it with someone else or they are strongly predisposed towards you
This is a decision no one can make for you but yourself, based on your career goals. I hear you on the impostor syndrome, more experience and some therapy can help. I don’t know that that will go away with a change of companies necessarily. Unless you think there’s something specific to this team, work, or company that makes you feel that way. Seems you already took the time and energy to apply and go through interviews so maybe there is another factor really driving your decision. But if total TC is the factor, I don’t know that that’s a wise metric given that wlb and hourly rate would likely be worse- since that matters to you. Lots to think about but if you can’t figure it out with logic, go with your heart. It’s ok to pivot or even make mistakes, you’ll be alright either way and can make another pivot if necessary later.
What role in cloud are you currently and what role at BCG is the offer for?
Personally, unless there is a specific reason that moving to BCG can unlock for your career that you desperately want, it will be a downgrade in the short to medium term in terms of total comp potential and WLB
What career track do you have in mind? If you're aiming for a leadership / management role, the BCG position seems promising. At L4 in Cloud it will be several years at a minimum before you get a management opportunity. Even if you only care about comp, in the long term your comp prospects look much better if you get onto a management track. Optimize for your career progression, not for short term comp.
Tbh idc about career track much, I’m just trying to maximize comp to exit the corporate world as fast as possible but don’t want to do this by just burning out. I understand it’ll take time. Just not sure if the “juice” is worth the squeeze at BCG
Is the role a consultant role at BCG (ie role out of b school)?
So it’s a non client facing role?
The reason I ask is that there’s a huge difference in comp progression and WLB depending on whether it’s client facing or not. Typical client facing is ~60 hours a week. Non client facing is closer to 40 depending on the role but still typically more hours / intensity than Google
