I’m being trained by three different people, and they’ve all given me different instructions for the same task. How do you politely find out what the official process is versus just their personal style? I don’t want to pick up bad habits, but I also don't want to ignore a teammate's advice.

It kind of depends on what the task is that they are instructing you to do. In my career as an engineer, there has almost always been official command media that outlines the requirements for different kinds of tasks. So, reading and understanding the command media has always been the first thing that I do.

From there, you can determine in detail how to go about meeting the command media. That is usually where personal preference kicks in.

like

Command media being a project managing tool or specific design protocols/standards? I would agree usually there are defined processes in place and if not you can ask the three people to agree on things before directing others.

Things aren’t always so black and white

Make sure that all three are present and have them agree on task , if you don’t friction will happen , and 2 of them will go to their managers and say your incompetent, instructions need to come from one source

If they’re all mentors pick your favorite and go from there 🤷‍♂️ if there’s three people teaching you it doesn’t sound like there’s an official policy anyways

My wife works at a school with kids with behavioral issues. The kids are abusive to the teachers/paras and have hit, kicked, pulled hair, as well as have grabbed the privates of teachers/paras. Nothing is ever done about it by higher up. Recently, the principal got kicked in the leg, and it turns out that the superintendent is “pressing charges” against the kid, but won’t do anything for the teachers/paras. What actions can my wife and the teachers take if the superintendent won't do anything?

Hi Fishes,

I applied to one of the roles and after initial screening I happened to see in the website that there are no suitable openings for my profile.

I heard that the cool off period is six months. Does that apply to my situation because I didn't attend any interview.

Can I use referals to apply before 6 months? Or should I wait for 6 more months?

Thanks for your help.

Any Bridge Engineers/Structural Engineers in here? I got my PE this year and have 5 YOE in TX + an MS. What sort of raise would you expect for receiving your PE working in a consulting firm? I am EOR on a number of structures in development, I manage EITs and Drafters (within projects; I'm not a supervisor), and am doing a lot in general. I'm at 78k currently, which is apparently still in the upper range of EIT salaries per a job posting in CO. I'm thinking of 15% (5% merit, 10% PE). Any ideas?
