Option 1 is with someone looking to retire in about 10 years time and so not looking to grow the firm at all beyond me. I have my own book and don’t need theirs—so they could retire or not and that doesn’t affect me. Option 2 is joining a small firm that is just starting to grow, so there are different practice areas to internally refer and receive referrals. This is still being negotiated, but assume I’m also full equity, eat what you kill after expenses. Option 3 is start a firm with another attorney looking to leave their firm. We have the same practice area and the other attorney has a book about twice the size of mine, but also the overhead that comes with it as far as staff, etc. Gut check tells me Option 1 with low overhead is the best place to start, but the desire to grow something bigger is what’s stopping me. Any advice from those who have made this move?
