I’m convinced the Series 7 is just a hazing ritual designed to see how much useless information we can memorize. I’m studying for it while working full-time and my brain is officially soup. Half of this stuff has zero application to the actual advice I’ll be giving clients, yet my job literally depends on this one three-hour window. Does anyone actually use this knowledge in the real world?

Buddy, if you’re thinking the 7 will allow you to give advice, you’re not paying attention lol

Depends on the firm tbh

like

It’s not a hazing ritual but it is designed to gatekeep. If you can’t put in the effort to pass a test everyone else in the industry has passed how can your employer trust that you will put in the effort to do proper discovery and make appropriate recommendations. If you can’t put in the effort to understand the basic industry rules and regulations how can the SEC and Finra trust that you won’t throw those regulations in the trash as soon as you start managing assets for customers. If the series 7 is too much for you finance isn’t the right career path. Licensing is a part of working in this sector, I’d be pretty upset if the person flipping burgers at McDonald’s refused to take a food safety course because they felt it would be below them, imagine the same scenario but with the person being trusted with your entire net worth.

Is IB worth the sacrifice of WLB? Obvious pay is really good but are the prestige and pay worth it if you’re planning on only doing it for a couple years?

Currently working at an IRA with great WLB. Honestly I love my job, the firm, and people I work with.

Also doing MBA part time at a T15 school. Thinking about switching to IB but I’ve done my research and I think I would burn out of IB in two years but I might be ok with that for the opportunities after.

Just found out that end of the year I will be promoted from analyst directly to VP and since it’s such a large jump I’ll be the lowest paid VP in asset management at only $135k TC. Should I stay it out and wait for TC to align or take the promotion and jump ship bc I will likely get paid more elsewhere given how recruiters/other companies eat up hiring recently promoted ppl from other firms?
