I'm getting rolled off a project that I was warned would be my last if I was rolled off. How different is the process of getting fired versus getting laid off?

In general, the firms will call it a separation and give you severance. They'd skip the severance if it was an egregious offense. If someone said this is your last chance, there should be a PIP in place, though. Layoffs or not, that statement puts them/the firm in a much tougher position since you could challenge the action taken in court as there wasn't a set of "must do the following things to improve..."

like

@p and @op- I asked for a roll off from a project which I had to wait almost 2 months to start. I spoke to my partner, documented my reasons and it led to a talent inquiry against the leadership of the project. Make sure you open up and explain all your concerns . This could be a chance to reshape your career path in a good way. Wish you luck

Thanks for the advice! If I do get fired I'm going to drive to the closest dog shelter and get a depression puppy

Remember, your job doesn't define you. Exist above what you do for a living, and always remember, you work to live, you don't live to work.

like

Who's the tough guy over at Deloitte throwing threats your way?

like

OP - sounds like this isn't the right job for you. Who warned you? Was it a formal HR warning with a PIP?

like

What happened that you needed that warning?

like

Gettig laid off doesn't come with a warning

like

It's probably a mismatch with the team. You need to stand your ground & talk to your counselor, another partner that's an open to listening to you.

like

Was it your sc that threatened you? I would consider firing my senior if he/she took it upon themselves to start saying that type of shit.

like

I'm an analyst. I was getting deliverables to my SC late. I wasn't going to be able to improve either, I was emailing after 2am consistently and missed a friend's wedding to try to hit deadlines.

like

sounds like you knew this was coming. Hope you find a better fit

like

Everyone was very amicable. I think it was actually a "not a good fit" situation. Usually that gets used as a scapegoat for drama, but I'm more analytical (excel/tableau/etc) and was in a content development role.

like

There are definitely more layoffs happening. One of my counselees got let go last Friday and I was told after the fact.

like

Prepare to be laid off. I was doing well on a project and they made the partner roll me off.

like

Yes still got severance, they called it a separation. That's all I know. It was a 20 second call...such bullshit

like

I got a 4 with 60% utilization and average ratings last year.

like

I'm sorry! Everything will get better I promise!

like

You'll bounce back, OP. Take a few days if you need it and then get going on the job hunt. You're very marketable and desirable to other employers - don't forget it.

like

Not an HR warning

like

Good luck!! Let us know how it goes.

like

Don't worry too much about it, I'm sure your talents are better served somewhere else.

Idk what to do with my career. I feel very lost. I have been sitting on the bench a lot. I have tried networking but no projects come up. Not that I’m complaining about having no work, but I just feel like I’m missing out on the experiences and personal growth / development. As someone early on their career, I would like to learn as much as possible. Should I apply for other jobs?

If you are asked to leave your firm (e.g., being told as a third year that it’s not working out and you should begin to look elsewhere, given a bit of a runway), does that count as being fired/terminated for the sake of future job applications? If you’re asked why you left that job, is it okay to not say you were fired but just five other reasons why you wanted a change?

My wife was informed a few weeks ago that she would be laid off as of end of year. She signed the paperwork and will be receiving a decent severance due to her tenure there. Now the company is saying they may have some other work for her to do for a few months and they could extend her contract if interested. If she says no, is she still eligible for her severance since she already signed her paperwork?
