I’m an FA at ML, been in the role for 1 year and 8 months, but have 23 years of industry experience. Quarterly, I have a performance review call with my Market Executive and until today never heard anything negative… my growth is slower than I’d like and definitely I’m sure that’s why, but today he said last time “they” wanted to give me a letter of education and he talked “them” out of it. First of all, who is “they” / “them” and what would the letter of education be for? Any thoughts?
Love to see this. It's a process finding what you want and don't want. Glad to see you figured out what you wanted and headed that way. Best of luck!
Big 4 isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. I’ve known many people that have burnt out and left. It’s not for everyone
VP2, are you asking about the company who’s coaching me?
Congratulations -- seriously! I hung out my own shingle full-time from 2011-2013 (I've consulted part-time for 30+ years), and despite the stress of "making payroll," i.e., contributing to the family revenues without knowing how long any particular gig was going to last, I made really good money, worked with top executives at places like Abbott Labs, Lenovo, Sanofi, and others, and had the kind of influence and access that is rare. I even have written about some of my experiences, in particular the executive coaching component. I can laugh now when Abbott said "no" to my one-year proposal, saying they had to see how my first engagement went, and then 18+ months later I was still working with them.
I never did it, but I can still say you should start journaling immediately. That way, when you do have an opportunity to write about it, whether for a peer-reviewed publication like MIT Sloan Management Review, then you'll have more "grist for your mill." Luckily, I have hundreds of pages of interview transcripts, notes, etc. Had I journaled, I'd have had some more in-the-moment insights to include in my books and articles than the retrospective reflections that invariably miss something.
And, the sooner you can write your own book, the better. I beat out McKinsey or BCG for the gig with Abbott because I had a book, even though it was self-published, and because of my customized approach rather than what the two premier firms pitched. I sold enough copies of the self-published book to sign three different book contracts with publishers after the self-published book.
DM me and I'll see if I can throw any business your way. You never know.
As someone who has studied, consulted, and coaches about how to be a trustworthy leader, and who has endeavored to follow the examples of the great leaders I’ve worked with and written about, it’s building trust-based relationships that sometimes start with conversations like this that make life worth living and help to keep our society functioning.
Good luck!
Awesome hearing this! I’m considering the same as I can’t find work anywhere - even after getting my MBA. Simply nothing!
I am emthused to see all this support. I would trully apprwciaye it if anyone is willong to help/coach me along as well. Really need to find a way to make "payroll" with children in college as a only parent. I have over 20 years in various industries all business based, both local and international amd a masters degree and just finished a post grad program in project mgt.
Thanks
