I'm in CA. Got laid off a month ago so now I'm technically on "website time" but still legally an employee of the firm. I'm doing my CTAPP annual reporting and realized my bar dues haven't been paid yet. Do you think my firm will pay these since I'm still legally their employee? My termination / "transition letter" doesn't say anything about it. I'm worried about the dues not getting paid and it affecting my ability to get a new job.

After you are stealth laid off, other than job search, what do you do? I assume they won’t give you work and even if they do, you can politely decline? How do you feel about you are not progressing anymore and seeing other people progressing in their career? I have no intention to make partner, but still feel a bit stuck not doing that much.

I was fortunate in the past to have had recruiters scout me directly so this is the first time in over a decade that I am applying to everything that I’m qualified for, mostly qualified for, and way over qualified for with zero leads. Only 3 interviews thus far that didn’t go forward.

Can I afford a $1.5M primary residence with a ~$9,000 monthly payment after 20% down if my household monthly take home is ~$25,000 (with another $50k in annual bonus)? No debt other than monthly credit card bills. Am I being irresponsible? Will I struggle month to month?

If you do billable work on a given PTO/vacation day, do you still count that day as vacation? Or do you get that vacation day "back"? Or do you only get the part that you billed "back"? (Or some other option.)

If a recession happens, as it looks like we are upon one, how would firms decide who to fire? Would they look purely at hours and cut associates with the lowest hours? How do you manage competing interests during a singing or closing?
