Quite difficult and the more senior you get the harder it will be to retool. Tons of big law litigation folks will be vying for the same jobs. I’d suggest you try to move to your firm’s litigation group if you think you want to do litigation long term.
If you’re willing to take a pay cut then it’s totally doable. In my jurisdiction the prosecutor’s office is always hiring, and they take all experience levels
This will depend in part on location and where you are trying to go. SDNY/NY, for example, will be incredibly competitive as folks from firms with litigation experience are vying for those jobs. A secondary or smaller market, as one poster mentioned already, may be less competitive.
Rising Star
Doable. Consider a clerkship in the jurisdiction you want to be a prosecutor in.
Also want to note that, especially with corporate and litigation experience, you would be a very attractive candidate for in-house roles—especially for startups or smaller companies who need GCs with 360-degree skills.
You could potentially go to a federal agency and transfer from there into doj.
