If you don’t know the answer then you are not ready for the promotion.
I was comfortably on track for a promotion with an M-level role at my previous account but we were ravaged by DOGE cuts. I prefer to return to GPS work but it’s sparse. That’s the core of my question: is it better for my promo to take a commercial client, or keep the internal role (assuming no GPS opportunities become available).
GPS is still the one promoting you….to me it would make sense to stay on the internal project if its GPS as that gives you more visibility to leadership. Even if staffed to Commercial, GPS still has to be able to afford and ultimately place you in a M role at some point.
SM1 that’s a good perspective. My gut reaction was client work (regardless of whether it’s GPS or Commercial) is going to be viewed as more impactful than an internal role. But if you’re on an internal GPS project and getting good exposure to leadership, that’s prob the move. That said, in OP’s situation I think it’s client work > internal since the practice alignment doesn’t differ
Honestly, you probably are not getting M in this current climate. My brother fell into this trap. He got put on a hi vis commercial project, and brought in over $7mil of business. However, when it came time for promo, GPS did not care. To them, he was taking salary and not contributing for almost a year. He got passed over and feedback was to switch to commercial or find a GPS project. I would stay with whichever project increases your skills and keeps you employed the longest and try out for promo and see what happens.
This is great feedback, thank you. It’s a tough environment for sure. I ended up not taking the commercial role, as it wasn’t really an M-level role anyway. But I’m still on the hunt for GPS and commercial clients where I can flex my skills and we will see what happens at year end! 🫡
We understand the question. However the fact it is being asked is alarming and notable
Being on commercial side did not affect me getting promoted.
If you need a backfill, let me know!!
