I'm joining an IHC department as the second lawyer. GC has been solo up to this point. They're offering the title Assistant GC, which TBH is already above market for my YOE. Do I ask for AGC since it's no skin off their backs, or just take the good deal they're already offering me? I could always ask for it as a promotion in a year or two.

Titles vary so much from place to place that your ask may seem odd. The only title with clear significance across shops is GC.

It does not matter. Compensation is the way that corporations show how valuable you are to the firm.

The two things that matter in house are comp and who you report to (assuming similar sized law departments). Take a job called counsel that reports to the gc before you take a job called assistant general counsel that reports to a deputy general counsel.

As others have said who cares what your title is.

Additional Posts in In-House Counsel

I’m in discussions to become the GC of a mid size but international company that does ~$1 billion in annual revenue. Smallish legal department. They’ve asked for my comp expectations. I don’t have specific expectations but I want to be compensated at least market for a NYC based GC (which looks like cash comp of at least $300k plus bonus, etc). Any suggestions on how people would respond?

I’m in big law and on the cusp of making the jump to in-house. It sounds like the company I just interviewed with is getting ready to make me an offer. It’s definitely going to be a pay cut coming from big law but I do get some nice equity in the company. Is the jump worth it? I’m so burnt out by big law and this seems like an awesome opportunity to help shape a newish company. Any tips on how to figure out if this is the right move for me?
