Depends on your specific agency but most, including ours, are fine with shorts as long as you don't look like a total slob.
If you look like a slob you so can’t sit with us
I think it depends on the shorts and like how they fit / how you pair them. I invested in a lot of dresses / skirts so nice and flowy. The other option is walking to work in athletic clothes and changing when you get there too?
The better you are at your job, the less it matters what you wear. You can also bring a change of clothes.
Shorts are not as common as you might think because the building that you are in will be highly air-conditioned no matter what the weather is. But as long as they somehow look like business shorts (ex: Tailored, not too short, paired with shoes and a shirt that dress them up a bit) you wouldn’t be judged for them. We’re a pretty casual and okay-with-anything bunch.
If you’re looking not to wear pants, I see more casual summer dresses than I see shorts.
As long as you're not presenting to a client it's pretty much anything goes. Ask the account director for wardrobe suggestions if you are presenting to a client and not sure what to wear...some clients also won't care, some will be nerds
As another creative ad gal, I prefer to wear skirts or dresses. Midi or just above the knee is my go-to for the office. Breezy and I don’t have to worry about flashing anyone by accident haha
Longer (not too tight) nice shorts are fine. I’d avoid them on days where you have leadership or client meetings.
I saw some content recently that said dress how senior women at your office dress. If they wear shorts you can. If they wear open toed shoes you can. I think this differs between departments. But I also think depending on your age dress how other women are in another department even.
I feel like creatives can get away with anything or can be trendy or don’t care etc. Honestly a creative could wear a burlap sack and I wouldn’t think anything of it ha. That being said I have seen a large variety of how older creative woman dress. I know someone that dresses a little more masculine because they grew up in advertising with mostly guys and have always had to fit in. I know females that are super trendy. Some preppy. Some minimal. Some in all black. Some with tons of color. I know people that are more hipster. Some that dress more conservative considering it’s a male dominated industry. I also have seen younger creatives wear some questionable outfits that I would never wear even out on a Saturday night.
That being said, I think there’s a lot of freedom in how to dress. I think jeans and even linen pants when it’s this hot out is miserable. I personally wouldn’t wear shorts. I wear a lot of dresses and skirts. I think it’s nice having a variety of lengths, fabrics, and colors. The office is always freezing so having some sort of jacket is always needed.
If you’re wearing shorts to work, they need to literally be at the knee/right above it. Nothing really short. I would try a dress or skirt for when it’s super hot.
Invest in linens !
Are there clients in the office? And yeah after a certain point there’s no fabric magical or minimal enough that you’d want to walk to work in it and THEN wear it all day
I tend to bring a change of clothes if the weather is not ideal and have wipes and deodorant handy if I get too sweaty, especially if I ride my bike into the office. Most places seem to be relaxed these days so you're probably fine.
I wear shorts all the time, as long as no one looks like they are going out in Vegas to Miami I could care less
