Designing your own stuff is the worst. Find a good designer and ask them to be objective… an objective opinion is the best medicine!
Start big and work your way down, take breaks to look at things from a new perspective. What's more, share this with your peers, not designers and the like. Create or find a focus group for testing.
Your own product will never be perfect.
Sometimes I have to walk away from it for a day or two and then look at it with fresh eyes. Often when I do that, I realize I don't need to make anymore changes. When I stare at things for too long, that is when I overanalyze.
Someone once told me the difference between amateurs and professionals is that professionals just got the project finished. Amateurs wasted a lot of time debating with themselves. So it's a simple decision, if you want to be professional you won't fall into the trap of having the perfect be the enemy of the good.
10,000 hours of trial and error, and having faith in hitting those “eureka!” moments. I’ve been on and off with building a new portfolio website from scratch for months. I often need to stop what I’m doing and ask myself what aesthetic I’m into now. It used to be symmetrical/minimalist graphics. Now I’m leaning toward a liminal/vaporwave/retro look.
Walk away for 1-2 days. I find I get clarity after.
My old boss. He's great and whenever I do a new reel or get myself in your spot I send it over to him and he rips it to shred in ways that are helpful. Friends and family will almost always try to protect your feelings when what you really want is brutal honesty.
Keep it simple 🍎
