McKinsey & Company Has any industry experienced candidates pivot to MBB Engagement Manager before? My roommate works at FAANG as Senior Analyst (Ops, 6+ YOE) and was approached by McKinsey & Company recruiter for an EM role. He hasn’t done consulting before. Would this be too much of a risk? His goal is to pivot to PE S&O eventually.

Don’t say anything about leaving. If you end up getting staffed provide this manager with some backups that would do a great job and create a great transition plan. Don’t want you to lose out on your visa just to preserve a relationship that would probably be fine anyway.
People get new jobs all the time and the offers come in a varying times. This manager should understand.
Was in similar situation. My manager was planning on assigning me new work and decided to let him know and I put it a 3 week notice. 2 week notice is minimum, you can push it further if you like.
My new job needs me to start two weeks from the day I get my visa approved. And as much as I’d like to give more notice, I can’t without having that visa approval notice because things can go sideways and I’d be out of a job
Do not tell them you’re leaving just to maintain relationship. Because if your visa doesn’t get approved, you won’t be leaving anyway!
Be smart not emotional.
How about you say that you are planning to take 2-4 weeks off?
Tried that and he said happy to wait a couple weeks to have you start since it’s holiday season. Which is how I pushed this mess from December to Jan 😩
Feels like this bridge will just be burned despite my best efforts. Guess I just have to deal with the fallout/ have a tough conversation. Sigh.
Think of yourself and don’t give two thoughts about anyone else - don’t utter a word about leaving till you’ve signed a contract with a set starting date with another employer. That’s how I did it (albeit UK notice period is 3 months)
If it’s a relationship worth saving, he’ll understand. Visa is not to be messed with.
It’s also going to be the start of a project so relatively easy to replace you.
What kind of visa are you on?
H1B in the US so lots of uncertainty around if/ when it will be approved
Why not just tell them the truth? People leaving consulting all the time and if it’s a manager you have a good relationship with, I don’t see the harm.
