I'm posting because I'm looking for some guidance on what kinds of things I should be doing to look at starting my career in public accounting once I graduate this December. I’m a non-traditional student at a non-targeted school with little to no accounting experience, I will be completing my master's also so that I can gain the 150 Credit hours needed to sit for the CPA exam. I have applied to a few associate positions but have been turned away from each can anyone offer any advice?

I would focus on your studies at the moment and attending networking events

You def want to focus on networking. Several of my jobs over the years have been because of networking and the people that I met.

Hi, if you need help with your career path, you can request career mentorship at Refermarket.

Website: https://bit.ly/careerservices-refermarket

Please do not only apply for jobs online.

It's all about networking. Reach out to alumni working at the companies that interest you. Set up an informational interview w each person. After you ask them questions about their role/career path ...towards the end of the call...Ask them to refer you to other people in the company. Be sure to keep in touch with all of these professionals. Don't just set up an informational interview and then never re-connect. You need to build rapport with people so if an opportunity opens up they think of you or you have earned the right to reach out to them to connect you to the hiring manager.

People like to hire people they know, like and trust. Plus, 85% or jobs are found via networking, NOT online portals. Set yourself apart from your peers and deliberately network.

Senior attorneys at v100, how common is it for attorneys who start at small firms to lateral to biglaw? Have you worked with any? Conventional wisdom is always that if you don’t start there it’s hard to “trade up”. My coworker and I just did it to two different great v30 firms, and I’m wondering if it’s really that uncommon? Just out of curiosity. We’re not special counsel with special niche skills or anything, just associates. Pitfalls to beware? Positives?

I'm a corporate recruiter with 3 years of experience. Finishing my degree in HRM 5/2022. I'm thinking of getting my SHRM -CP shortly after graduation.

I'm not sure of where to go after that, but I doubt I will stick with recruiting or my current firm.

Has anyone here started off in recruiting and branched out to other HR functions? Do you like your new role? Do you wish you stuck with recruiting?

My company went toxic in the last couple months. Chose me and started interviewing. Had a very successful interview with Amazon but recruiter is working hard trying to place me and said there’s no knowing how long to find a team. Meanwhile I just received a Director offer for a company with a 29% pay bump July 1. If Amazon or any other FAANG/large co gets back to me, is there an acceptable way to not burn bridges with new job and accept or delay start date with FAANG? Or fuck it just hop?

Which practice group (m&a, capital markets, or funds) would be best for someone who genuinely doesn’t care about this job/law but wants to stay in biglaw (NYC) as long as possible? Some folks say m&a is more “intellectually stimulating” and I wonder, for that reason, perhaps capital markets might suit me? How did you give notice you were lateraling to people you like? Particularly if you haven't been there that long?

I'm lateraling to another firm because frankly I think the management of this one is terrible, but the people (and individual partners) I actually work with are awesome. I've only been here for about 18 months, so I imagine that short time frame will make it extra awkward 😬
