I’m realizing how much my training area shapes how hiring panels see me. Even when methods transfer, they still focus on topic alignment. It makes changing research direction difficult. Did anyone pivot fields after postdoc and how did you frame it?

I think it’s pretty hard in academia to leave the general area of study but shifting from one part of a broad topic to another is pretty common (eg I did a lot of muscle protein work and was able to shift to kinase work as I was essentially doing kinase work)

It’s way easier in industry though as it’s all about methods and skills not topic

Hey all, having issues with interviewing this year. I’ve been passed over every opportunity I really want and I’m unsure how to regroup and move forward. I’m really trying to break into method development roles and I haven’t had the opportunity to do so with my analytical experience. A lot of my HPLC and LCMS experience is with already established methods. Any tips?
