I’m starting my first IHC role coming from biglaw. I’d love to take a month off in between jobs if possible to recharge. I guess it would depend on companies but generally speaking, is one month break from the offer date to start date realistic to negotiate?

When are you planning on giving notice? If you give a two week notice, then asking for another month from the end of the two week period would be considered long. But it doesn’t hurt to ask. I got it but I had to move so I had a good reason.

like

May be frowned upon to ask for 4 weeks. A pre-planned vacation is a good way to get it extended.

Similarly you can ask to delay for another week or 2 to wrap up a big matter (arbitration, MSJ, etc).

like

Depends on where you’re going — but often times the place you are going will want you to start relatively quickly (within 2 weeks) of ending your current gig. If you have a pre-planned vacation or something like that, that could work.

Definitely ask. I always took 3-4 weeks between jobs to recharge.

3-4 weeks do not include the 2 weeks notice. In my previous jobs, I had to do the transition in the 2 weeks, it’s very busy not a easy process. I need the extra time to recharge

Doesn’t hurt to ask! I took 5 weeks between my last day at my firm and starting my first IHC role. I didn’t get any push back - but that was in 2021, so very different job market.

Yes. I do 3 weeks minimum.

I’m in big law and on the cusp of making the jump to in-house. It sounds like the company I just interviewed with is getting ready to make me an offer. It’s definitely going to be a pay cut coming from big law but I do get some nice equity in the company. Is the jump worth it? I’m so burnt out by big law and this seems like an awesome opportunity to help shape a newish company. Any tips on how to figure out if this is the right move for me?

Can anyone help me wrap my head around this post Series C start-up equity offer? It’s an IP director position, the the base is $170 with 10% bonus (both lower than I was expecting). There’s also an equity component: 0.15% of current fully diluted equity. This equates to about 30000 shares at a strike price of $2. They also indicate the preferred stock price is $6 and preferred stock equity is $188k (whatever that means). They are in the middle of a new financing and valuation round.

For those working in house, how much “from scratch” document drafting are you doing vs. reviewing and revising “outside documents”. For example, if your company wants to enter into a joint venture company with another entity, are you drafting the company agreement “from scratch” or is it based on internal forms? Or are you getting outside counsel to do it?

Anyone here made the move from a boutique ECVC firm to in house at a VC? My company cut staff to 4 days/wk to save funds. I was getting requests from coworkers for docs needed urgently on our day off (fridays). I would oblige them. But then, I learned that those same coworkers had been put back to 5 days because they were deemed “essential“. I felt foolish and decided to stop working on fridays. If you practice collections in-house, what do you earn and do you receive a bonus?

I have practiced for five years and make $121k as an employee of a financial services company. As the only attorney, I oversee all statewide collections efforts, from demand letter to garnishment, with a case volume of nearly 7k new cases per year, of which the majority I end up litigating. I receive only a $1k bonus per year. Is my compensation fair? My last insurance defense gig was $75k.

I’m in-house at a small company (60 people), started right out of law school about 5 years ago. We had a legal team of 5 then. Everyone has left and we just hired a new GC. I went from $70k to $100k a little over a year ago. I am expecting an offer from a firm doing business law work but think this might be an opportunity to go to my current employer and ask for a significant raise, with new offer in hand. Any thoughts or advice going into this?

For in-house counsel roles, does firm prestige matter? For example, would the fact that an applicant is from Sullivan & Cromwell vs, say, White & Case matter at all, or is it much more about experience/interview? Does it matter as much as law school credentials? Assuming a mid-level corporate associate seeking to go in-house.
