I do that a lot too. 😪 but this has helped me cut some of the wondering. 1. Outline the issues and follow up with your supervising attorney to make sure you’re on the same track. 2. Start with secondary resources if you really don’t know a lot of what you need to research. 3. Read cases that secondary sources identify as relevant to your issues. 4. If you start seeing the same sources or cases over and over, you have researched too much. 5. Give yourself an allotted amount of time to research and force yourself to step away. 6. Close the research tabs and start drafting.

This right here. I have the same problem and doing these things have all helped me too, especially numbers 1 and 2.

You obviously know your weakness. Now consider your strengths before you take that job at McDonald's or Walmart. Are you good at oral arguments? Do you have a desire to work in tax law, contract law, family law? You could go for the low-hanging fruit and become a personal injury attorney (sorry guys and gals. No offense intended.) You went through law school and passed the bar, so you have to have some skills or you wouldn't still be there. When looking for another position, highlight your skills, own your shortcomings, and ask if the firm has legal assistants who can focus on the research side of the case. You may even want to broach this subject with your current boss. They hired you because they thought you would be an asset, so they may be willing to accommodate you. Your ADHD is a diagnosed disability, so there may be grounds to seek an accommodation under the ADA. Sorry, but I am not as knowledgeable about labor laws as I am other fields, so you may want to consult with someone who is.

Thanks for the outline. I think most of the trouble is that I’m a slow reader.

Do you use Chat GPT? That helps speed my research along. I have the paid version on OpenAI and use it at least 10x a day.

I have used it but find it often states the law incorrectly. It’s a good starting point for brainstorming search terms tho

What makes you say that?

In a really dense regulatory field and it just takes me way too long to understand what I’m looking at before I even answer the question. Has taken me over a week for an assignment that would probably take a normal person 2-3 days.

New midlevel associate at a big law firm and still ramping up. I’m having a lot of trouble tackling small or discrete tasks that are either administrative in nature or otherwise because I don’t have a full plate and something to focus on. I feel bad stopping in the middle of the day and doing something else (e.g. watching tv)since I’m already not billing many hours, but my brain feels all over the place and think that may be the only solution. Anyone have exp. with this or advice?

One of my frustrations with myself (writing it out here so I can work on it) is that I will print out something that I need, such as a traffic collision report. I will read it without actually reading it. This results in spending time without actually retaining info. Does this happen to anyone else? I’ve found that I can actually focus when I truly force myself, but often this happens after I’ve discovered an error or an important piece of information that I should have noticed earlier.

Are people still live on here? I was diagnosed last year with ADD and I’ve tried two stimulants so far. After 4 years I want to leave law because of my adhd! I have been to 4 different firms and at each place I feel like I have been “found out”. What are your strategies for completing work efficiently? How do you figure out how long projects should take? A consistent piece of feedback on my yearly reviews has been that I over-bill & spend too much time on assignments. It’s something I actively work on, but I still have no concrete sense of how long I should spend on basic tasks (e.g., drafting a motion to dismiss). My firm is right to expect that I manage my time better as a mid-level associate. WFH has made my time management worse.

One of the things that my ADD coach helped me with was realizing that I wasn’t prioritizing activities that help me feel recharged. Between work and home responsibilities, I was just burnt out and overwhelmed.

So now when I start to get burned out I focus on reducing auditory overwhelm, getting outside, listen to music, get comfortable, read a fun book, etc.

As we’re heading into the weekend, what are some things you do to recharge and give yourself a break?
