Some schools value it more than others. It definitely gets tracked and could push you over the edge but is not necessary
I got into the 2 schools I visited and didn't get into any schools I didn't visit. Not that it was the only reason, but maybe pick a couple to visit
visiting is def the way to go if you can swing it. visited 3/6 of my schools, and almost didn’t apply to one bc of rep but fell in love when i went to visit and my dream school was awful so you never know how things’ll shake out. can also say that places like tuck/ ross generally keep track of that (again personal experience, take a grain of salt). like ross will ask what events you attended etc. some schools want their matriculation numbers up. also i will say that i was also trying to go to a school located in a place id stay postgrad, so it was important for me to visit these cities.
also not sure which stage you’re in— it helped me finalize my lists by visiting but you can also choose to visit after you hear back, every school has an admitted students day. def visit somewhere before you commit
There are tons of virtual events that you can attend without spending as much time and money. Schools don't expect you to visit.
But, as A1 noted, going to campus can give you a better sense of whether you see your self in that program and the community.
But, you can make that decision after being accepted and attending admitted students' days.
Use your time and money wisely! Most schools have some sort of student ambassadors who will answer questions for prospective applicants.
