What if you blur your background?
I mean, if it were me, I’d go for it and Zoom in from wherever you need to. But I also do things that others probably wouldn’t 🤣
Update: I ended up staying home. Glad I did because the jury had great feedback. Also, big win 👍🏻 thanks everyone for the comments!
Hopefully now you have some time to carve some turns :)
Are you lead counsel? If so, yes, frowned upon
Use a virtual background or blur your background. In my area we always ask for sealed verdicts and the judge just calls with the numbers
How much money is on the line and what type of case? If it’s a low budget slip and fall zoom in from the lodge off camera.
Depends on the judge. The court might see your decision not to appear for the verdict in-person as an insult to the jurors’ diligent service.
On the other hand, the court may prefer to limit in-person appearances.
I’d advise calling the clerk tomorrow to be sure.
Say out of safety and caution with omnicron you want zoom in. Then blue your background on the call
To play it safe, definitely zoom in from hotel room or a quiet area within the lodge. I wouldn’t risk zooming in from any other setting.
I'd confirm first thing that the verdict is coming via zoom and not that the judge will just call or that you're expected to be in person. If zoom is fine, then I think you could do it from your car. It's the week of Xmas and entirely possible you're traveling for that purpose. Plus you're not going to have much notice so it looks less like you're intentionally in a weird place and more like you're dropping everything to zoom in on short notice.
Make sure your in your hotel room with a pretty blank background.
Uh …. Send someone. I rarely take verdicts. Then again I always have an associate with me at trial. By the time they come out the die is cast anyway so who cares how it looks. As far as the judge is concerned he or she will get over it.
Use a virtual background. Our firm has one we all use with its logo.
Unfortunately, we can't blur or use a virtual background with this judge (or court?).
Blur it!!
Been a part of many zoom civil trials, my Judge would definitely mind for what it’s worth. If you can be in a static location tho and use a zoom background maybe it could work? But it’s a risk on your end
If you have to ask, the answer is probably it's a bad idea. I wouldn't risk it (especially bc you said you can't blur). Too many variables, internet strength, quiet area, etc. Or you could get a hotel room, but check strength of wifi while using zoom with a friend to make sure it won't fail when you need it.
Log in with a blurred background!
You can’t go snowboarding. You have to be there
What if post trial motions are needed? I would stay home.
