I’m wondering if anyone else is struggling with a complete lack of guidance in their firm. I’m a tax associate and have been here for a year, but I feel like I’ve been left to figure absolutely everything out on my own. I can barely even build relationships with senior staff because they are all too busy to care. I don’t want to come off as needy but could really use some mentorship. What should I do?

This must be a small accounting firm, right? I’ve been in your shoes. Especially lots of those smaller and older firms, they don’t have a training program, you either swim or you die. I was literally begging for work from everyone in the firm. It took me 4 years to get my own book of clients to work regularly (without having to ask other people to give me work).

Best guess that OP is at a smaller public accounting firm. I went to a smaller public accounting firm for a year in a manager role and the training there was weak especially on-the-job for associates.

Are there any second year associates you can sound board your questions to?

If you work at a small firm, this is exactly why I went to a bigger firm, but not big 4. I can have the training/help I need to succeed while still having a steady amount of work whenever I need

The ol’ baptism by fire.

I was at a mid size firm and it was great. After 2 years I got an offer from big4 and started as a senior. Just feeling the same. Been here for 6 months and everyone is just so busy. Haven't even met my counsel. Supposedly she comes in but I can't seem to ever catch her? Other seniors are nice but again I can in the middle of busy season and it's been hard.

This is pretty common in my experience. It really just takes time.

How does your company manage (track) all of the documents related to a merger you are working on? Are you using a matter management software, a spreadsheet, shared file, etc? Keeping up with the moving pieces is killing me with just a spreadsheet.
