In a past role, my promotion kept getting pushed back due to “timing,” and I wasn’t sure whether it was reasonable to ask for a salary adjustment in the meantime. Has anyone successfully negotiated a raise when a promised promotion was delayed?

I tried this years ago in a similar situation while being told I'm up for next promotion cycle and it kept feeling like the carrot and stick. In the end I found an external offer made the most sense. Internal promo compensation can take forever and be given minimum increase while external offers can increase compensation/title/better management and more.
If salary is the only concern, then yes absolutely bring it up to your manager and get a salary adjustment and be ready to show how you have been operating at the next level for a long time.
Still, I always suggest talking with a few external recruiters to simply know what market rate is for your current skills and years of experience since this will be the best way to know if you're ever very underpaid or doing ok.

Carrot and the stick is such a great analogy. Thank you for the thoughtful response - really appreciate it!

I actually negotiated one this year. I was tired of them giving me the run around so I told them I needed more money. It took several months but my boss made it happen. She didn't want to risk losing me.

That’s great to hear, thank you!

When you’ve accumulated 14 days of PTO, would you measure that as 2 weeks salary (1 paycheck) if you exit the company? Or are salaried employees paid only for week days thus 14 days PTO is nearly 3 weeks of salary worth? What’s your take?

AWS vs Cloudflare BDR roles

AWS lowballed but I negotiated to match Cloudflare. Cloudflare offers more equity but AWS has a higher base.

I love Cloudflare. The people are great but it’s an engineering culture and the sales team isn’t as well shaped up and I can’t go for a promotion until at least 18 months of tenure. I am an investor in the company and think of them super highly. I’ve already got half a years SDR experience and AWS promotes quicker.

AWS has prestige but is it worth it?

Random, but valid/persistent thought.

After 2 years of a pandemic and working independently for many years, I am not feeling interviews AT ALL. There are points in the interview where I want to just say "Look! Either hire me or don't".

How can I get over this feeling? I'm over the whole "stand in the line of fire to prove how good I am" bs. Any recommendations for getting over this or possible industries to pivot into to avoid bs interview processes and ghosting?

Additional Posts in Salary Negotiations

My husband just received a job offer on an opportunity he is really excited about. It would be great for his career and they are giving the 15% jump in base he asked for, however they won’t share what the target bonus amount would be. It’s an executive director position, so I would assume it’s a decent target bonus, but without that in writing it could honestly be a gift basket at the end of the year. Is it a red flag for them to not share this? His total comp could be less at this new job…

I’m interviewing with a startup and the range has a 40k difference from the lowest to highest point. It’s also pre-seed and comes with equity, and health, 401k benefits. It’s a director of sales role so I would eventually be recruiting and managing a team along with building the processes and strategy. What would you consider a fair compensation package? If they offer me something on the lower end of the range, is it still appropriate to counter with an offer that is over their stated range?
