In house or try to go part time? I’m fortunate where I’ve paid off my house and have enough set aside to retire and stay on that track making 200-300k a year. I’m an 8th year associate but had a career at a startup first and it cashed out with a great return finally. Should I go in house and be remote or offer my law firm the option of going down to 60% and remote? Do law firms even consider this option?

You can try going part time but 60% of infinity is still infinity.

I’m doing 60-80% and remote right now. It’s definitely a lot better, but it doesn’t mean I don’t still have 80 hour weeks time to time. What it does mean is that I can take time off more comfortably without making up so much billable time, and when I am billing 200 hours a month can put my foot down and not accept any new work because I’m already at like 2x capacity. Use it as a workload management tool, but it doesn’t fix what’s wrong with biglaw which is the unpredictability and long, erratic hours.

Yeah, that’s what’s so brutal about this job. And not being able to make weekend plans because deal work could come in Friday night and blow up the whole weekend. With less hours there’s less of this stuff by the law of probability alone, but even if I just have 20 clients vs 50, still happens time to time for my clients anyway unfortunately.

Litigators—how many different cases are you on?

Been feeling spread too thin lately but I don’t know whats typical. Curious what others do. And would you mind sharing whether you’re a junior, midlevel, partner, etc??

I realize sheer number of cases doesn’t tell the whole story… obviously you can be buried on one massive case. I’m finding it hard to jump back and forth between everything I have going on right now, though, but I don’t know if the answer is to just deal with it.

My firm’s IT (especially system saving and file locating function) is so bad 😐😞 and they keep doing updates no one asked them for just to mess with the stuff we already got a hang of without doing anything about the issues we actually need fixed. Anyone else in a similar boat? Do you bill the client for the time it takes to fix the IT issue (or IT inefficiency generally, like time taken to find a file in a convoluted system)? Or is that supposed to be our non-billable time?
