In this industry, I feel like we get two extremes of leadership: the showrunner or producer who hovers over every tiny decision, nitpicking edits and second-guessing calls, or the one who disappears for days and then swoops in at the last minute with huge changes. Both are brutal in different ways. Personally, I can’t decide which is more exhausting. What do you think: is it worse to have a boss breathing down your neck, or one who vanishes until it’s too late?

I'll take the one that disappears, because the job can get done. I'm just very careful with them and try to get everything in writing for when they inevitably try to shift the blame. The nitpickers will drive you mad with "I have a little idea! Can we make it all orange?!".

Absent is worse. At least with a micromanager you know where you stand

Both have some huge downsides. I pick whichever one at least lets the work get done in a reasonable time. The micromanager can hinder the process so much that it throws everything out of whack, but so can those last-minute huge changes.

A nitpicking micromanager is no picnic, but that's preferable to the absent boss who turns up at the end. People who are hands on managers can be annoying, but if they're good at their work, their constant attention will make things better. Intermittent or absentee leadership is often no leadership at all, and it just increases the chance of failure.

I once asked a colleague at a radio company how much he's paid monthly, and he outright refused to tell me. In fact, he found it very odd that I asked. I later learned that he was making double my salary. I know it's not an employee's job to fix pay inequity by sharing their salary figures, but I'm still of the opinion that it helps uncover pay gaps. But do you think it's wise to do so at the risk of damaging your work environment or the whole thing backfiring on you? Thoughts are welcome.
