At my firm it’s pretty normal to send it firm wide and to include where you’re going, so I’m surprised by these responses.
Yes, include where you’re going for the sake of gossipy people like me who will call someone else to get the scoop on you if you don’t include it :)

I do not send mass farewells. I just ride off into the distance like Django as the old firm burns behind me.
Coach
Haha! One of my partner-mentors recommended that I do.
Yes, absolutely. Make sure to also include your SSN and bank wiring details while you’re at it
Coach
Lmao. My mentor said that it looks bad if I don’t email people that I have socialized/worked with on my last day about leaving. Believe me, I also find them corny and unnecessary.
If in-house, clerking or government, yes. If a competitor firm, your choice.

Yes, so attorneys in Hong Kong and Frankfurt can think “ha, this idiot is going to X firm”
Lol this made me chuckle a lot. I wonder that too when I see the “all” list serve
I think what most people are saying above, is no, don’t say where you’re going.
And also don’t send mass farewell emails. Email whoever you actually worked with and/or want to know you’re leaving.
Edit: with the caveat that if you’re going in house and plan to send business to your old firm, then maybe an office wide farewell is appropriate - or if you’re set on getting some government experience and coming back to the firm as a rainmaker white collar partner or something like that. If you’re just leaving, leave.
Mentor
I like it when people say where they’re going, but they often don’t do so. Also, I think office-wide email plus people you work closely with outside of your office is more appropriate then firm-wide.

…the pushback in this thread seems excessive. Yes, I’d include it. These people will probably continue to be in your orbit unless you’re completely switching practice groups and/or quitting the law etc., makes sense to let them know your next steps, stay connected on LinkedIn, etc. You never know when you will run into people again, people from your current firm will leave and wind up at your clients, at your new firm, across from you, etc. If they have a positive view of you, good for them to have in the back of their mind “oh, former associate x works there! Let me ask them this question” etc. Plus it’s not like it’s a secret, it’ll be public info as soon as you update your LinkedIn and/or your new firm posts a bio.
When I see a colleague is leaving I immediately want to know where they’re going to and why (and I’ll ask if I’m closeish with them). I wouldn’t send a firm wide email but you already said it’s going to be appropriately tailored.

You’ve probably already told the people who care and will be happy for you.
In mine I told people “good luck” and left it at that.
I like knowing where people are headed geographically if they are moving to another market, although I don’t need to know the specifics of their job. I just sort of file it away in the back of my mind for networking purposes. Typically farewell emails at my firm go to the class of xx hashtag and a group-wide hashtag, so I am only getting these emails from people I actually know.
Coach
By doing a mass farewell email, I am only emailing people I have worked or socialized with in the past. Not sending a firmwide email.
Mentor
Why be weird and hide it? It’s not like everyone can’t see on your LI in week or so.
I send a mass email to the associates who will be handling my cases with my personal email and cell so if they have questions, they can contact me.
Didn’t mention I was leaving
To the whole firm, 85 percent of which you’ve never worked with? No. Tailored farewells to your office and/or practice group is fine if tastefully done. If you’re going to another firm, don’t mention where — just say you enjoyed your experience, mentorship, etc etc. if in-house - green light.
I just wish the people who I worked with who were leaving mid-work stream respected me enough to give me a reasonable amount of heads up. A senior associate who I’m on a pro Bono case with just dropped they’re leaving in two days, seriously leaving me in the lurch. Been working with them for 2 years…
