Inspire the young ones - Post Graduate or Not?
At how many yoe did you do your MBA/Masters, from which college and what was your first annual pay after that?
Was the grind worth it?

Let me add a little something here from my personal experience:

1. If you are at 0-2 YOE:
Prepare well for CAT because you'll have a lesser work pressure and go for IIM ABC, MDI, etc.

2. If you are between 3-7 YOE:
Give GMAT, and apply for the college that is as per your profile and your career goals. You might want to switch out from your undergrad career path to a different career post MBA

3. If you're beyond say 10 YOE:
An executive MBA is the best bet as it'll give you the additional advantage you're looking for in a career graph that is starting to look like a plateau.

Hope this helps! 😊👍🏼

Hi @Capgemeni 1,

I've not yet done my MBA, I've taken the GMAT and now plan to apply to MBA colleges in 2022. Won't be going for MBA in US, because it's too expensive and too less ROI compared to that.

Context: total 5 YoE
1.5 Soft Engg
3.5 Business Analyst (functional domain, solution design, Product feature ideation, documentation etc.)
(Made internal switch by giving interviews in IJP)

Intend to move into Product Management roles which is a natural progression for my career path, the higher earning capabilities and newer opportunities are what I'm looking for.

likesmart

Completely depends on what one is looking for.

I did MBA from a tier1 college after 2.5 YoE to switch career paths. And it worked out beautifully.

An MBA will allow you to change your nature of work and will provide you an accelerated career path. My friends in tech are currently working as team leads after 5/6 years of experience. Post MBA you will start as a manager in the corporate. (Leaving out consulting because that's a different discussion)

If you are doing an MBA thinking it'll allow you to earn a lot more as soon as you graduate, then the probability of disappointment increases astronomically. Tech is where the money's at.

What's the salary situation at other consulting firms apart from (MBB) say Deloitte..Starting pay and after 3/4 years?
I am also stuck in a similar dilemma about Tech and MBA. Currently in tech role with good pay but don't see myself in coding for long.

Let’s take a balanced view going forward
IT salaries
- High now, expected to be high in next 3-5 years due to rapid digitisation demand globally , globalisation of Indian IT talent (English speaking, decent competency) and freelance opportunities
- Going forward threat from SEA nations,& Eastern Europe (Ukraine, Indonesia etc.) that are creating strong IT talent pipeline
- Supply balancing in India with more IT engineers graduating in next 2-3 years as colleges inc. batch size to meet demand and earn money
Outlook: Good for next 3-5 years, post that people with 10+ exp might get trapped in middle of pyramid (project management, tech lead roles as the sealing). New talent will bring in fresh understanding of new technologies and drive high ROI projects ( tech stack for AR, VR, Meta universe etc.)
MBA salaries
- From T1 will start at a high base but CAGR expected to be much lower than IT for next 3-4 years - business are prioritising tech over anything else now to meet changing customer/market demand
- As the IT supply shortage flattens in ~5 yrs., and fiscal stimulus by central banks reduces. Business will resort back to key business pillars sales, marketing, operations, strategy, product management to grow. I would not be surprised to see a sudden surge in salaries of MBA professionals due to sudden demand surge
Outlook: neutral for next 3-5 years, uptick expected post that. Long run corporates would need both IT engineers and Business people to grow. But, rate of disruption higher in IT might make people with 10+ yrs redundant where as business people would flourish with rich 10+ years of business experience that just ads ( VP, CXO, Director roles might open post 10+ years post MBA exp.)

Could you please share the link to the KEN article?

Finished my MBA in India at 24. 2 YOE pre MBA. Salary was 30 LPA for the first year post the MBA. Won't go into how it grew because I eventually moved to Europe. The grind was definitely worth it.

ZS4 can I DM you regarding ISB, also wanted to know the role you got at zs post isb, I am also an A here

If you want to enter into strategy and move towards the c suite, it's kind of a requirment. It also helps if you're looking to relocate to another country. If you want to earn money, the current scenario is more suited to not do an MBA.

For me personally, completed my CA, had a few offers but wanted to enter strategy consulting.

Completed my MBA from SPJIMR, mumbai around 4.5 years ago. Have a decent pay and work I enjoy mostly with a clear idea of how to get to where I want to be.

I could have earned possibly as much without an MBA but the experiences, travel and job opportunities would have been more limited

likehelpful

Yes.
You are correct, thanks for giving guidance

Total 13 years of exp , 2 years pre MBA and 11 Post MBA

Here is my take:
- if you are working in high tech in real tech roles, no need to do an MBA in India. If you really want to change domain, try and get it from abroad after 4-5 years

- if you are from top engg college and not in hightech and want to change domain or need money, target only top 10-12 MBA colleges ( iims, xl, fms, spj) etc.

- if you are from t2 or t3 school engg background, i would prioritize following based on your personal situation
- top 10 mba India
- good foreign MBA
- t1 mba India

- if you are going out of top 15-20 colleges in India for MBA you are wasting your time and money. Those 20 colleges will produce about 10k MBA every year, that is more than enough for the talent requirements

- the above is assuming you dont want to get an MS which could also be an option

My Story:
- Graduated as mediocre student in 2007 from one of the top 10 engg college and worked with a IT services firm in their research divison for 2 years ( there was no AI , blockchain those days and work was monotonus with less respect for tech folks)

- did MBA from one of the top 10 b schools. Not a star student but would like to say may be more than average. Now working as management consultant

Compensation change: 4 lpa in 2007 to about 90lpa+ now in India ( thats close to 24 times time 14 years). I am happy with decision i made and how my life turned out to be.

I’d say YES for India’s scenario until now..
Of course, Companies in India are now preferring skills more than just a post Gdegree, but, skills + PG would be better in my opinion

like

Got it that’s helpful. Where are you working now and how has the role developed?

I am a Software engineer. I graduated 2 years back from a Tier - 2 college. I was an an above average student and most of my friends including me are earning 20-35 LPA (including stocks). How different would it be monetarily after say 6-7 years if I do MBA from Tier - 1 college now ?

like

that was insightful. thanks everyone!

I did from a tier 2 b school in kerala, I started my career with 4 LPA as a management graduate role via a campus placement. 8.5 years later I am earning 22 LPA. It was worth it for me.

Don't compare your worth with another person's journey. In my opinion any b school you graduate from you are probably 5-6 years behind an average IIM pass out. In a career that probably spans 30 years, that's not a major set back

There are people who pass out of IIMs and get a good start with a good package. But may not necessarily have good hikes. You will catch up to their pay eventually.

Hi,

I have 6+ yoe in business intelligence(Qlik), SQL. Self taught python up to oops/pandas/re.
What's the best direction to take my career forward and transition into a better domain if possible?
Should I do some DS/ML or cloud(azure/gcp) courses? If yes, suggest some.
I get calls for python but they demand scraping & webdev(selenium/bs/django/flask) which I have no interest in.
Can someone guide?
Also, what are the best BI roles I can go for & how?
