Work on both but definitely notice that the digital/social team thinks that they’re the only ones capable of doing digital/social.
Seriously, it’s not that hard.
Well, folks tend to follow trends, right? I always see “keeps up with trends” in job postings. You tend to market/target what’s hot or currently effective at the moment based on the data.
You have it backwards, OP. Print and TV lets the creative and messaging stand out front-and-center. Social and digital are bogged down by a small view-area and lots of surrounding distraction, as well as a bunch of technological widgets and gimmicks that water down the creative purity.
In addition, “social creatives” are probably happier because they aren’t even close to doing as much concepting, which is admittedly a grueling process. Most of the billable hours used by social creatives is dealing with the execution. Plenty of social creatives don’t even know HOW to concept, especially in the role known as the “digital art director.” Ignorance is bliss.
Or...the types of people who would work purely social and digital are the same kind who buy into BS motivational positivity fake it until you makeitness.
You have never observed me reviewing a banner ad 😴😴😴😴
Is digital even a thing any more? It sucks.
Agencies make a lot more money on TV and print media commissions. A LOT more. Social earns far less money, and a big reason is because agencies are being systematically undercut by Facebook, Twitter, Google, Snap, etc, selling directly to clients. So to the agency’s finance department, platforms make a big difference. Even though we’re supposed to sell the client’s stuff, the whole reason we have jobs is to earn money for the place that pays our checks, which is the agency. This is why the industry is in a tailspin; we need to change our business models so that we can truly get paid for the best ideas, regardless of platform.
I think that could be true. There’s more rhetoric around ‘the death of the industry’ with print and TV. Which leads to substantially more cynicism than people working mostly on social and digital.
That's because it's easy to make and dismiss. Also the stakes are much lower in digital and social because no expects those things to be creative or good.
OP, you’re a CD! You should focus more on making the work great regardless of medium and platform. I’m willing to bet that if you do so, your teams will be happier.
i can see what you mean @ACD1. i brought this up because of what i see here, not really about my team. though, honestly, i’d say it reflects how i see creatives in my agency feeling, as well.
i just want people to be excited about what they do, and i’m trying to figure out why some people seem satisfied and some don’t.
It’s all fun as long as it’s good.
And it’s usually good if it’s fun.
No one ever gets to spend two weeks in a 5-star Malibu hotel because of a social campaign.
🤔 I’m guessing you’re boasting that as a highlight. *slow clap* “Hey, barkeep, another round of fresh 🥜 for this one”
this is based off the large majority of responses to posts here, so just a little slice of the industry. my guess is if you’ve consciously gotten into social and digital, then you’re happy with the work. if you’re doing more conventional creative, then you’re dissatisfied with the work.
@Copy6 - are you talking about community management?
living the dream 🙋🏻♀️
False
Wait, there are happy people in advertising?

I worked only on social since the beginning of my career. It was very fun in the beginning when there were not rules or budgets. Now everyone wants social to be done extremely quick, with same small budgets, and it is exhausting working at a fast pace non stop.
I don’t miss spending a year to make a 30, counting concept and selling to the client. Sometimes it’s nice to just make something smaller, faster, and see how it does and then make more stuff.
Besides old tv ads just won’t work on the kids coming up.... the structures, the devices, it’s all outdated
