Coach
I’d tell them you’re interested in current role but you’re willing to hear his thoughts if he believes you’re more suited for another.

I exited earlier this year under these circumstances. Worked out well for me.
For the initial role, I clicked well with the team and had the skills they wanted, but they couldn't reach my comp expectations. Recruiter then said a different director was interested in me. This director reports into the same VP as the first role. So I had a couple more interviews and got an offer at the bottom end of my range (which, of course, I negotiated up a bit).
I'm pretty sure that I made a good impression and they wanted to hire me, but had to hire me into a different role / title to get HR to approve my comp expectations.
The work I'm doing now on a daily basis is a mix between the two roles I interviewed for (basically the strategy analytics skills from the initial role, but for the BizDev team of the second team).
It's turned out to be pretty awesome. I support a BizDev team by doing pretty much all the strategy and analytics work. I write SQL queries, visualize things in Tableau, have working sessions with the team using Tableau to cut the data on the fly, then make pretty "strategy consultant slides" to take the business cases to the execs. I don't have any Ps/Ds nitpicking meaningless details on slides and I get to make recommendations that have material impact on the bottom line.
All of that to say, it doesn't hurt to explore. You may stumble into a role that fits you well.
