They’re looking for free work.

Big companies (Apple, Doordash, Nike, Duolingo) would never open themselves up to legal liabilities like that. They don’t need ‘free work’. They just do it to see the quality of your work.
Maybe some small brands would do it, dunno.
I wouldn't say it's standard practice. Sketchy? That's assuming intent. But I can say I've worked for two in-house companies (both F500). Didn't have to do spec work for either. We hired two mid-level copywriters recently and we didn't require a test project. The recruiter wanted one. Not for nefarious reasons but because she heard other companies do them. I'd say it probably boils down to either hiring manager preference or HR policy.
Ask them if they mind paying you for it

A lot of in-house agencies do this.
Yes that’s normal. I didn’t need to do test work but had to prep a 45 min presentation and a total of 4 rounds of interviews
Like others have said, don’t do unpaid work. Unless you’re really desperate. If you let them take advantage of you during the interview process, believe me, they will continue to exploit you if you’re hired.
This a really common thing if you’re interviewing in the sports industry, and I have noticed other in-house companies are doing the same model. I’ve been burned damn near every time (ghosted or rejected) except for the most recent role I accepted that was in-house. Proceed at your own risk.
