It really depends… does anyone work from home or multiple people? Any kids being homeschooled? Aging parents that may have to move in? Entertaining a lot? Extended family visiting often? Lots of crafts or hobbies that take up space? Like do you need a music studio? Do you have a home business or need to house inventory? Can you afford to pay someone to help clean it? Can you afford to heat/cool all that space? What percent would be used the majority of the week? Does it come with a large lot? After Covid, we were happy to have extra space inside and out. Only you know if it makes sense.
Another point, I watch real estate markets quite a bit. My personal opinion is that larger homes increase at a quicker pace, but I also feel like they are harder to sell. Is this your dream home? Are the kids still young or will they be leaving home in just a few years? A lot of factors to consider.
My best friend growing up lived in 7k sqft with 4 people. Neither of her parents worked (inherited money), so caring for the house was basically their full time jobs. You couldn't even hear people on opposite sides, so they always had to call each other on their cell phones. They also had tons of random expenses (like having to replace the custom roof tiles after a hail storm was 250k).
Everyone was so insightful here. Thanks all. This house will be a pass!
nah bro get it ull grow into it
This sounds insane to me. Just went from a 2000sq ft to 3000 sq ft for a family of 4 (2 small children) and it's so much house for us. It's already proving very difficult for us to upkeep housework, just the vacuuming alone.
I am in a 1900 sq ft single family house .. all by myself.
That’s wild! Maybe if you have like a tennis court and basketball court inside. I’m in 1600 sqft condo now and it’s too big, just two of us but there’s always too much house to maintain
I’m in a 5800 sqft house. Me, my wife, two kids 1y and 4y.
We have lots of space to have plenty of people over and move around if hosting. Plenty of space for us to work (mostly in office, but sometimes wfh and just general catch up from home sometimes).
Someone else mentioned, but it’s a lot to keep clean, if you’re busy you may need to hire cleaners every once in a while. Also, there is something like “1% of house cost every year for house expenses”, that’s not an exaggeration. It’s just the more stuff there is the more things can break, need maintenance, etc. I’m very handy, but at this point in my and my wife’s careers, it’s easily better ROI to spend time working a bit extra and hire more help.
I have no regrets other than I have a lousy rate because I bought end of 2023. Waiting a bit more for rates to go down, but I do have a few investment properties with 2.5 and 3% rates so that makes me feel better…
I mean that’s pretty big. We are a family of 5 with 4500 square ft which is plenty roomy.
That seems like a lot of house to maintain/heat/cool.
What are you in now? Do you feel you’re in need of extra space?
In an 1100 sqft apartment right now haha. Yes 4500 is my target but saw this 6000 house, gorgeous but clearly much too big.
Second the it depends. We just moved from a 5900 sq ft home to a 5200. Not a huge difference but definitely noticeable. Heating and cooling bills were much higher with 5900, and it was more overwhelming to clean. The space was awesome though. I think a lot of how it feels depends on how the layout is and if it's usable. I wouldn't judge on size alone but more the overall feel.
I went from a 2600 sq ft to a 5800 sq ft back down now to a 2700 sq ft 3bed/2.5 baths with a bonus room for a family of three. I thought I needed a big house but it was really too much. I count the master, the amount of kids plus one extra bedroom for adequate space. The perfect balance for me was an awesome backyard. Outdoor kitchen, in-ground pool, fire pit area and room for the kids and adults alike to move freely around. You need indoor/outdoor space. Less indoor space meant less area to clean. One HVAC verses three. To replace all would be about $50k.
Depends on the layout. We're in a 4,200 sqft house with a 2,200 basement and it feels just right. It's me my spouse and 4 kids. The house felt huge when we first moved in but as the kids grew everything started feeling just right. Some of the rooms are a bit oversized but it's nice when we host people or the kids have their friends over. Not sure if I would go bigger just because we want to continue living here after the kids move out and a larger house for just 2 would be tough to justify. We really like the area too - close to everything.
We are in a 2k sq ft house for 3 and we feel like we need one more bedroom or a nice bonus space. No basements in Florida either.
Ya it’s all layout and floors. It feels much bigger.
Too small. You need 10k sq ft for 4 people
5900 is the lot size. How big is the actual home
House is 5900 sqft. Lot size was like 0.5ish acres
