I think the best thing to do is a version of what's mentioned in the article, just say you're really busy and you can't stay in the chat. And don't worry about it after that, if they gossip about you behind your back that's not your problem. You'll have your time back, and you won't be pestered by tons of notifications, and that's what matters. Oh, what a time to be alive.

Can you just turn off notifications and pretend it doesn't exist? I find that being a very passive member of a group chat is the best way to avoid the drama. I have had several situations like this in my personal life and I always just decide to keep quiet rather than leave the group.
I mean, I think your concerns are valid if you’re not in the circle of toxic gossip you become the topic of that toxic gossip. I would just silent notifications and every now and then check in and pretend to read it, but even that might be risky, not being involved enough good luck to you.
