I am seeing stellar returns and extremely low expense ratios but apparently since they're quantitatively managed algorithms, they don't account for things like corona for example.

I had the option to go mbb. Ultimately it was a work life balance decision for me. I just didn’t feel like it was worth it
One eyed man in the land of the blind
I didn’t know what I was doing in undergrad and ended up at big 4. Grades/extracurriculars were great, attended a great school, but I didn’t even know what consulting was until sometime junior year. By the time I got serious about job searching, big 4 was the best I could get. I imagine there will always be folks who go through a similar “late bloomer” path
This was me. Didn’t know anything about finance/consulting until senior year of college. Took a bit of a winding path but eventually ended up at a firm that is as good or better than any of my peers outside of a few exceptions (target school).
Not everyone follows the gilded path that college hardos slobber over
Well B4 consulting is no ones first choice sooo
thanks for taking it with a sense of humor hahahah I know it was uncalled for :')
I mean the obvious answer is people only go to big4 if they can’t get into any of the sexier / higher paying jobs.
Why do you think big4 and MBB tend to recruit from different schools, have different GPA requirements, different interviews…etc
I didn’t apply to MBB, because I wanted to do technology consulting. I have been reached out to by Bain and BCG to interview, but Daddy D still has my heart.
Pro
Fwiw, I personally know people who were much smarter than me in high school/uni that ended up in B4. Different strokes ig 🤷♂️

Smart =/ able to case and interview well

MBB doesn’t pay a lot more than B4. Pay is similar. My friend interviewed there while he was here. Exit opps are similar. I’m not worried about it. I got my B4 job offer at 20 before I even started my internship. I’m proud of getting in and I know I can only go further from here on out at 23. I’m confident in myself and don’t give a damn what’s happening at mbb or any other corporate slave place
Pay is only similar if you’re comparing to B4 strategy or considering the hourly wage based on relative WLB.

I have no regrets whatsoever in B4
Plenty of top talent students everywhere - some have better opportunities than others depending on where they go to school or who they know. I’ve seen mediocre talent go to MBB and burn fast. I’ve seen top talent go to B4 and burn fast. Every individual is different.
Admittedly the work MBB does is much higher churn and much higher caliber on average. Some of it is not even comparable to what we do.
Pro
OP, sadly, you and I are not top talent. But, we should be happy with what we are getting for our talent level 😂

Yall talking about Big 4 like it’s not still some of the best jobs out there lmao
This has the same flavor as the “how do I survive on a lower middle class income? I’m 25 and make 200k” posts I see in the NYC bowl
Bro c’mon, when has B4 consulting EVER been competitive with MBB for top talent?
Deloitte has. We fetch a couple each year and give them the koolaide to take us over MBB. You’d be surprised, many do fall
Folks on here seem hyper focused on brand. Brand means very little. There’s excellent management consultants everywhere and Accenture, Deloitte and others such as IBM are no exception. Also, MBB firms have a very odd recruitment process, which no longer attracts and secures the best of the best consultants. I’ve met some very mediocre BCG folks
I’m just listing the various touchpoints in the process. Not sure about your experience, but I had multiple days of interviews after the alumni case.
A&M > Big4 > MBB

agree
MBBs are a lot more demanding. Most people stay there and leave in 2 - 3 years. But, you can expect work life balance at a Big4
You can expect it. Whether you’ll get it is another matter

There’s not a right or wrong answer to this. It depends on the individual and their background/circumstances but I think what’s deemed as attractive to top talent students is changing given the WFH environment and the emphasis on WLB and mental health these past few years. Saying this to say that I know a few top talent colleagues that chose firms with good WLB and good pay but not pay like MBB for the reasons stated above
I’m making 130k with 2 years of experience, work remotely and rarely work nights and I think I’m doing ok. My life aspirations do not have to do with my job. Whatever floats your boat dude.
You’re comparing 4 completely different industries.
Ehhhh. IB/MBB/B4 (strategy & non tech consulting I mean) all kinda pull from the same pool of applicants

Big4/ACN/BAH are still comparably strong in some areas, especially when it comes to tech. Obviously not FAANG level, but much more advanced in scale and capability than MBB.
