Typically I ping and ask if they are available for quick call. Directly calling is ok if you are regularly in touch and it’s a known thing where we avoid formalities. These days calling without notice is a bit like dropping at your doorstep without notice.
The most rude thing you can do on teams is say “Hi” and nothing else
I concur. No hello, no small talk, no wasting my time. Get straight to the point, we're here to work, then go home and enjoy time away from work.
You send me "hi" or "hello" or "how are you" with no other context and all you're getting in return is a link to https://nohello.net/

Depends if yall were messaging before. If I am in a chat and they start calling, it makes sense because that's what we used to do with phones. You would be texting your friend about something and then all of a sudden you would think gosh I can't type all this so you would call and continue the convo right in your last text.
If they just call out of nowhere after not talking all day or many days, I get panicked by it. It screams emergency. If it's not an urgent time sensitive thing and it's a call out of nowhere I find it rude and inconsiderate.
I usually will ping them first and then call unless it’s an emergency. I hate when people randomly call me!
I usually call cause it’s like calling on the phone? If you can’t talk then reject? Same same

I usually ask if they have time for a call in both cases because I don’t want to waste time getting sent to voicemail.
Always ask before you call, as they might be in a middle of something
Only if we’re chill like that

Common sense would dictate to ask if they are available for a call, and if Teams is okay. Calling their laptop out of the blue is not ideal. Sometimes people work from an open space office or are in conference rooms with others.
If you are close you can call their cell out of the blue in case they are free.
Do not randomly call people. If you’re chatting on Teams, ask if it’s a good time to call to explain things better
I ask if I can call them prior to calling them
Why is calling on the teams not synonymous to calling someone’s desk phone back in the days? We didn’t text/email someone to ask if I can call. You call, they choose whether to answer.
I try not to cold call because I want the recipient to pick up, but I do get cold calls from my leadership.
I expect an event invite 3 weeks in advance if you want to *speak* to me. Geeeze !
Why not call them on the phone?
Just call
You’re so polite. I always say pick up the f***ing phone. 😝
If I’m in a call, it’s annoying. If I’m not, I actually like it because I have one less email to go back and forth on
Either one is annoying without checking if the person is available
I’ll do the direct dial if:
- I’m in an IM thread with anyone and it’s going to take longer than two minutes of messaging to resolve
- I’m someone’s junior and I need info/action from them ASAP in a calendar gap
- I’m someone’s peer and I want to provide a quick casual update or hotwash something
- I’m someone’s manager and they clearly need a talking to about their dog sh*t performance. I will not hesitate to call their cell phone and ask what is going on if the ball is being dropped.
I love cold calls
