Is it normal for your supervising atty to always change your product? Im a 6th yr, but 2nd year to now i never had a supervising atty (moved firms/practice areas). He mostly says the same thing as what im saying. He’s never called me out, thanks me etc. idk lol. New to me and its weird.

I’m in the same boat. I worked with a partner that would make a few edits to a brief/motion and he fired me SUPPOSEDLY because of it. Now I work for partners that make way more edits and compliment how nice my work is. I honestly think it’s how invested the partner is in the case and the level of precision they would like to have but perhaps recognize you don’t quite have yet.

I think it’s based on the supervisor’s editing style. Those that make substantive changes always seem to be stylistic.

Currently at a super conservative defense firm. I do really well but keep getting the criticism that I tend to just do things on my own initiative. I’m just predisposed to being decisive and rather autonomous. Besides being a solo atty, where would this skillset be better suited? Plaintiffs work?

Advice: my firm incentivized associates to get licensed in fed courts - 4 fed courts for a 5k raise. They also covered the admission fee. I just accepted an offer with another firm and will be putting in my 2 weeks notice tomorrow. Is it wrong to submit an expense report for the charges I incurred related to the fed court admission fees? I didn’t plan on moving to another firm; the new firm sought me out and made me an offer - the process happened so fast. I want to be professional about this.

When drafting a brief or other submissions for court or arbitration, do you use words such as clearly, erroneously, etc. to emphasize certain points? Our managing partner says that we should, but all of the writing guides for litigators that I've read repeats the mantra "show, don't tell" and explain that most judges dread such words.

I know that the politically correct thing to do here is to do whatever the managing partner wants me to do, but I just wanted to ask for other ppl's opinion.

It may seem obvious, but in my experience partners value trial experience over anything else, so get it however you can. For example, my firm will favor a former prosecutor who has seen the courtroom a lot but has no civil litigation experience (not even a depo) over a seasoned associate who has only second chaired cases with a partner but hasn’t tried a case. Even trying a case and losing gives you credibility at my firm because you still did it.
