Yes. You crushed it at your old firm to get to senior manager. Now you have to learn the new firm’s methodology, culture, and general nuances. It’s incredibly overwhelming as you want to learn it all day one. I jumped from one national as a SM to another firm as a SM so I feel for you 100%.
any new job is disorienting for a minute as you acclimate to how the company operates
In industry? Yes, especially if it’s a field you’re unfamiliar with, but you have to manage the overwhelm and break it down to process it
Also yes. Public has this bad habit of telling you nice things about ramping you up at the interview but once you start, all people see is your title, not how long you’ve been there. There’s a disconnect in terms of the training curve vs expectations in practice.
Also, as the new guy you’re fighting against already established cliques.
New guy always has to earn his stripes repeatedly, because you’re a part of no one’s incoming class.
Not to mention the skill difference - home grown folks have never seen what you seen so they default to you must be wrong before thinking about it.
Between adjusting to the firm, winning your audience over, and keeping up with people who had years to master that firm, it is highly under-appreciated how hard being an experienced hire at a new public accounting firm is.
Yes. Any new job is tough to start and then a high demand area like public accounting definitely would be overwhelming especially at the higher levels. I feel it took me a good 2 years to get to a more stable place in each firm I went to. Fitting the culture happened fast but getting all up to speed on clients took 2 years. One year to scramble through it and the second to have a more comprehensive understanding of them
Pwc had a great onboarding. Good companys will have it better than others that’s for sure
Also true - big 4 onboarding is way cleaner/organized than midsized and down.
I previously worked for GT - my experience was great, but my impression is that onboarding is left to the practice area, so I’d expect some variation of quality. I was WITCH/industry prior to, so the sales target portion scared me when I first joined
Yes
It is very normal for most jobs… “information overload” You can only process so much at once. Give yourself a break.
Yes. Write everything down and ask questions. Don’t be discouraged. Celebrate your successes.
Yes 100%. I do 2 - 3 projects with different firms and industries. After 4-6 week? It usually all falls into place. If not, move on.
Just started a new job at a different accounting firm and I think it’s normal. I legit started feeling the panic of not being busy like i would normally be during busy season, but i’m constantly telling myself that i’m the new person, so it will be a slow progression to get to a good medium.
