They might’ve just been saying that to be polite. Like when you see someone in the street or at a store and say “we should catch up when everything’s back to normal!” but then you never really intend to. Don’t take it personally.
You could try contacting someone else at the agency to prompt them, like their assistant, resource manager or the person who set up your first zoom call.
ECDs will usually close out convos with a “love your work, let’s keep this going” or “let’s keep in touch there’s a project coming up I have you in mind for”. It’s their way of keeping creatives in circulation of things change on their side and they need someone. It’s not personal, it’s just politics.
Sorry that happened to you. I can't say if that's common or not but something similar happened to me a couple of weeks ago when an old colleague reached out through LinkedIn and connected me with his boss; actually for an ECD position for a fully remote company.
His boss "excitedly" asked me to email her my availability and contact info so we can talk. I replied within a day on Thursday. Didn't hear back. Follow up on LinkedIn Monday night. Cricket.
I'd like to think my messages landed in the spam box but wouldn't be surprised if the initial request was more of a courteous response.
I agree with ACD 1 that if for whatever reason it's not going to work out, most experienced CDs, ECDs, and director/C suite level wouldn't ghost you, just so they have one more in their contact list.
But sadly, employees are increasingly treated as commodities, especially more so in a remote work environment.
Just keep in mind that it's business. It's not professional on their part IMO, but doesn't reflect on your talent and worth. Good luck!
As an ECD, I'd say it's probably not personal. They would never have taken a Zoom call with you if they didn't think you were good. They're probably overwhelmed and hiring isn't currently high on their priority list. Drop it for a month and then come back to them if you still need work.
