Is it okay to talk about salary in a first round? I have a job now, so I only want to change jobs if the pay is right. At the same time, I don't want to scare them off by mentioning money too soon. Is it better to wait for them to bring it up or ask right away to make sure you're on the same page?

Perfectly fine. This is expected and normal. No one on either side wants to waste time interviewing if it's a mutually bad fit. Better to find out if that's the case early on.

Do you want to continue interviewing if it’s 50% of what you’re looking for? No.

Bring it up in a curious way. You’d like to understand the budget and compensation package for the role. If you are only making the move for that, better earlier than later. If they are scared off by you asking too early, the pay probably wasn’t going to be great.

I am in the same boat, I have a job, but I am looking for something new. My rule of thumb is, at least for the moment, only apply for roles that have the salary range listed on the job description.

If you apply for a role where salary isn't listed, feel free to ask what the budget salary range is for the the role.

I have had third party recruiters contact me and asked as part of their initial screening what salary range I will be looking for, and I usually give them a range of about 10-20% above what I am currently making.
