I’m from a PhD engineering background. I talked to a bunch of directors at F500 on this and their answer was - yes, but after you’ve worked for them as an engineer and started to get more involved on the business side of thing.
It makes no sense to let you touch that stuff right out of the gate when there are also plenty of PhDs with consulting experience vying for it.

You have to work your way into it
Talk to people in the position you want and ask them where they started and how they got to where they are.
Typically in a large engineering company, opportunity is not equally distributed. There are some positions that set you up for strategy type roles better than others and you need to figure out which those are.
