Is it possible to retool as a senior associate? I fell into a somewhat niche practice area (registered funds) at my first firm, but I think I would really prefer a different practice area. I want to stay in big law and I would even be open to taking a class cut in order to find a better fit. Is this possible? (And if you think your firm would be open to this and you want a potential referral bonus, do lmk)

What practice areas are you interested in? I generally think retooling into almost any practice area is technically possible if you’re willing to start over from scratch. I’ve seen senior m&a associates move to L&E, senior litigators pivot to emerging companies/VC, etc.

That said, the more drastic the change, the more drastic the class year cut is likely to be. Anything is possible in theory, but whether it’s realistic or feasible for YOU depends on your current options, your work ethic/drive, & your ability to stomach the pay/seniority reset it may take to get where you want to go.

Do you think I can get cut down to summer?

You might be able to retool into e.g. private funds but otherwise will be tough (not impossible).

Have you reached out at your current firm? I knew someone who was a senior lit associate who retooled to gen corporate (went from 7th year to 1st and worked back up to midlevel; eventually went in-house). I never saw us hire anyone like that externally, though.

A friend of mine in CA retooled into 3 different practice areas and still made partner, fwiw

I really don’t recall all 3, other than employment law. I checked linkedin too to try to help and they don’t have a LinkedIn

RF is generally pretty hot now. Maybe try and lateral to a group doing work in the space you are more interested in.

I really feel like I should be excused from this "diversity and inclusiveness" training stuff lmao. It's about implicit bias and I'm sorry it's just not believable coming from an old white man's mouth when there are maybe 4 non-white associates. We're having these meetings 3 times this week. 🤦🏽‍♀️

I lateraled into a niche practice group in Sept 2021. I also have a 1 year old and have been mostly remote since I started - but have been keeping busy tracking towards 2400-2500 hours. That said getting to know people only remote has been kind of awkward at times (email only can be tough to decipher) although as a working mom the pros vastly outweigh the cons. Yesterday my main partner asked me to come in Thursday bc he will be there and set a time to meet. Is this good/bad?? kind of nervous!

Just started in Biglaw as a first year - one of the partners made a passing remark that he couldn’t remember my PQE but thinks I’m “the same as X associate”. Went on LinkedIn and saw that X associate is a third year. How do I gently correct this misconception in a future conversation?

Completely and totally miserable at my firm and just need a space to vent because my friends are tired of hearing about it. I wish the worst part about it was the amount of work, rather than the completely toxic culture, lack of appreciation, arbitrary and back/breaking deadlines, lack of mentorship/feedback/training, and the fact that the associates act like they don’t even know each other. I cry every day and constantly am made to feel stupid for not understanding the highly technical (cont.)

I understand this might sound a little snobby but I'm not trying for it to come off that way. I've been around impressive people throughout my adult life. T-14 and big law have placed me in the company of some really accomplished individuals. It likely skewed the bar in terms of what I find as impressive.

My girlfriend's sister works at a Fortune 500 company and views herself as very accomplished. She's not a good person. I also don't find her impressive so I don't particularly try

Did your firm’s leadership send a message re the horrific shooting? Before I lateraled we always got emails from leadership, which IMO were very humanizing and appreciated. New firm leadership seems to just avoid — probably to not appear politically involved. Your thoughts on these types of current events and firm acknowledgment?

I’ve asked for work but no luck. I know they say this is normal for a stub but when should I start getting worried and consider looking for exit options? Fyi, I like my practice group, so I don’t want to change to a different group within my firm, hence would have to lateral, if I have to. Also, other co-1st years are churning in high hours.
