Is it possible to retool as a senior associate? I fell into a somewhat niche practice area (registered funds) at my first firm, but I think I would really prefer a different practice area. I want to stay in big law and I would even be open to taking a class cut in order to find a better fit. Is this possible? Hello Beautiful People! Does anyone know of any really well paying part time jobs (preferably evening hours)? Whether it be remote or in person?

I lateraled into a niche practice group in Sept 2021. I also have a 1 year old and have been mostly remote since I started - but have been keeping busy tracking towards 2400-2500 hours. That said getting to know people only remote has been kind of awkward at times (email only can be tough to decipher) although as a working mom the pros vastly outweigh the cons. Yesterday my main partner asked me to come in Thursday bc he will be there and set a time to meet. Is this good/bad?? kind of nervous!

Just started in Biglaw as a first year - one of the partners made a passing remark that he couldn’t remember my PQE but thinks I’m “the same as X associate”. Went on LinkedIn and saw that X associate is a third year. How do I gently correct this misconception in a future conversation?

Completely and totally miserable at my firm and just need a space to vent because my friends are tired of hearing about it. I wish the worst part about it was the amount of work, rather than the completely toxic culture, lack of appreciation, arbitrary and back/breaking deadlines, lack of mentorship/feedback/training, and the fact that the associates act like they don’t even know each other. I cry every day and constantly am made to feel stupid for not understanding the highly technical (cont.)

I understand this might sound a little snobby but I'm not trying for it to come off that way. I've been around impressive people throughout my adult life. T-14 and big law have placed me in the company of some really accomplished individuals. It likely skewed the bar in terms of what I find as impressive.

Was interviewing with a firm and soon after receiving an offer, learned of bad culture/toxic partners in the practice group from a couple of associates who recently lateraled from the firm. I turned the offer down. A partner that I clicked with while interviewing reached out asking me why I turned down the offer. Should I be honest and relay what I heard?

Any big law associates looking to transfer out of Texas in light of the new laws repressing women's rights? My firm has an office in Colorado and a group of 4-5 of us have been discussing transferring today. Rent/Housing is roughly the same in the two states.

Did your firm’s leadership send a message re the horrific shooting? Before I lateraled we always got emails from leadership, which IMO were very humanizing and appreciated. About to finish my first year. I’m a specialist. Only going to hit 65% of my hours (took a 4 week vacation cause of wedding/hm).

When should a stub start getting worried about not having much work and low billable hours?
I’ve asked for work but no luck. I know they say this is normal for a stub but when should I start getting worried and consider looking for exit options? Fyi, I like my practice group, so I don’t want to change to a different group within my firm, hence would have to lateral, if I have to. Also, other co-1st years are churning in high hours.
