I'm pretty sure you're referring to bench, till you get staffed on a project you pretty much do nothing I wouldn't say for the first 6 months that's a bit long but from the time you join to when the project gets going definitely a few months but this depends on how quickly you get staffed and project conditions

I got hired at Deloitte and was on the bench for 2 weeks. If you’re benched for 6 months you will probably have a very short career in consulting. It’s possible you might have a project where you aren’t very busy though when you start. I’m not horrifically busy.
I theoretically belong to a project where I just sit around and hear the seniors during the calls with the client. No tasks and very rare o2o with the manager. There are many at the same situation with me and we got hired together.
