Is it worth it to start your own specialty tax consulting business as an exit opportunity from Big4? Would love to do more consulting but the opportunities to do the consulting I would like at Big4 seem limited. Anyone's experience would be nice. TIA

Edit: this would be 5-7 years from now, a few years into being manager.

As a staff? No, I wouldn’t think so. You would need experience first.

It could be possible depending on what type of tax you fall into. Key would be to form good relationships with clients. I could see certain clients going for it if they already trusted you and you saved them fees. Stuff like simple return prep, running calculations, etc.

Honestly... I'd look into midmarket firms where you can get more experience than simply large f500 clients.

We have a lot of different clients in the B4. They aren’t all F500.

If you’re interested in going into consulting at a mid tear firm, DM me and I can check if we have openings.

7 year lawyer here. Been with the same big national firm all 7 years (not BigLaw) doing complex litigation. Been working remote a long time due to moving around for wife’s job. As a result of the moving was bumped off partner track. I’m looking at a great small firm that will be a practice change (but still litigation). I’m told they’re looking for someone with less experience and they’re skeptical because of my experience. It’s frustrating. How do I overcome this?

Right so here’s a bit of a dilemma I work to a much higher standard at home and it’s this high standard that means I’m in line for a promotion. I’ve grown so much and I feel really strong in my role I’m also busier than ever. The problem is we’re going back into the office and I don’t want to go in if it’s just going to be senior management in asking me to get them lunches for client meetings or fetch a glass of water and cutlery for meeting rooms. Definitely not ready to go back to that….
