I never did and I am 9 years in from graduation. Did my undergrad in optical engineering and later my master of science in engineering management. My professional experience has been mostly grounded in hardware integration and test.
There was 1 year about 5 or so years back where I seriously considered taking the exam, but ended up not pursuing it because I did not see the worth.
I suspect it may depend most on the field of engineering you are in. It seems more applicable in Civil Engineering for instance.
I have never met another engineer in my workplace who advertised that they took the exam. Would definitely be curious to know if there is some hidden benefit though, because I have no clue.
Engineers on the team that I work with either hold the fundamentals of engineering certification or the professional engineer license. Which is better?
Do you ever intend on stamping something? You need the FE to become a PE. The longer out of school you wait to take it, the more you will forget from your college studies. Take it asap so you don't kneecap yourself later in your career.
I have several employees who are ready to sit for the PE but struggling to pass the FE bc they didn't take it in school. I honestly thought the FE was a harder test compared to the PE.
I am a civil and as others mentioned, it's very important for our field.
I’m civil. I’m not sure about your line of work, but getting my PE helped me to get more respect and better paying positions.
