Is your workplace unionized? I have only worked in one environment where nurses and social workers were in unions. Curious how common it is.

I’m not sure if it could be location. In CA most healthcare organizations are union. I’ve been working in a union healthcare job for going on 6 yrs. Prior management, we never needed them. Current management, we’re constantly having the union help us push back when management violates our contract or tries to pull something shady. They definitely help hold organizations and management accountable if needed. They also negociate your pay steps and benifits which is also why you may tend to see some of the unionized organizations paying more. From my point of view, it depends on management if there’s a lot of fighting and drama. Like i said, first 4 yrs here, didn’t really have any issues so rarely was in contact with union reps. Currently, we have horrible management that should have never been hired here in the first place. They’re constantly up to something. For example, there were some issues with retaliation this week that the union rep is helping handle, ans a few weeks ago, management tried to illegally change a policy to add more disciplinary occurences. So it really depends on the work environment and how strong your union is on how often you would be utilizing them.

That’s great that they have been helping deal with bad management. My experience with unions was in CA so that makes sense. I am now in PA and have been surprised at how few healthcare orgs have unions.

I've been in a student union for the last five years, and let me tell you I'm not sure the benefits outweigh the costs lol. I want to believe in union politics so bad, but the drama and incessant complaining/in-fighting is almost too much to bear. Makes me wonder what a more professional workers union looks like

Oh really? I’m sorry to hear that. Do you feel like anything has been helpful?

I am definitely part of a union though I have never needed them

That’s great you have never needed it!

There are parts of my company that are unionized.

I just want to say to the Indian managers / SMs etc. stop taking everything so seriously and stressing people out on your teams. I have had managers who put initiative work so high in importance that it stresses me out about client work. Chill out and stop emailing on weekends. Hang out with your families! Doesn’t mean don’t work hard but chill the heck out people. Clearly this is just a job that doesn’t pay you well enough in the first place why are you stressing other people out too?!
