I don't want to generalize but this has been true in my experience. My Indian M/SMs also have a hard time with small talk or just talking about the weekend. It's usually hi I'm here to micromanage you and we need to talk about x, y, z for work.
It's also different when someone goes to grad school here VS moves from India after 10+ years of experience. These two categories of Indian managers have different working styles.
I make it a point to ask about my SM/Ms kids. They barely have anything to say. Sorry Indian work culture is terrible and of you don’t do something for yourself then your kids won’t do it either and it will go on forever.
Usually I will tag this as stereotyping, but this is real. There are reasons for it, specially if you’re indian middle class and had to spend a fortune / your parent’s retirement money to come here. They want to succeed and are ultra ambitious. And there is that Indian hierarchy based work culture too. That doesn’t justifies micro management but there is a backstory. I’ve seen people adjusting attitudes more they grow into their role. People who don’t, they don’t go far in their career either. I think it’s great that most of us are ambitious ( and yes making money is not a bad thing as someone suggested), but need to adjust attitude

C1 - you are literally what this thread is about. 🤣😂
Replace the word Indian with Deloitte, add PPMDs after SMs and MAYBE people take your post more seriously! Cheerio!
I was at Deloitte for a few years out of business school and one thing that I took away from that exp was that people there like to think that they are in the business of saving lives.. I dunno every person I worked with had this burning need to show how many hours they worked.. add the politics and toxic culture to it and you find yourself in a perfect storm! I’m glad I left!

They are all trying to become Partners so they can make tons of money, feel good about the INR conversion of their bank balance, and buy a 10 bedroom house so they can post pictures on FB.
You’re right about the “bhai” thing. So STUPID. don’t even get me started about how women are treated unfairly in those situations too
Uhh so true! I have witnessed this as well, not just with desi managers but Chinese folks as well. My inference is also what’s drawn by most people on the thread - overly populated countries, raised like “first ana hai har race me”, insecurity and fear for numerous reasons.
Having said that I did find 1 very cool desi manager and learnt that we (I or you) need to own up to what we want to be and do. The times I said No to ridiculous asks I had a better WLB than the other times. I am on H1B visa as well and I understand the ‘fear’ part but I am over it!!
At the end nothing beats good work and a smart brain.
Now that I am in a managerial role I make sure that I don’t give work on weekends. Nothing we do is that urgent that it cannot wait a day, and if it cannot it should have hit the roof before weekend started.

Man this post truly hits it home. First of all how does D have so many desi managers? Seriously I think twice before working for a desi because most of the time they have no regard for personal life or being chill. Most lack the professionalism that is expected in the way one talks or carries themselves. Especially in tech they bring the “sarkaari” mindset. Man really wish D changed their recruitment patterns to not let this happen. No issue with hiring Desis (one myself) but don’t let the culture of the firm get ruined.

I mean the real question to ask is who tf hires them. Ek ke baad ek creepy uncle . Nikaalo be inko
It seems like a consulting/Deloitte culture problem. Have never experienced this at Google. My Desi managers here cared more than other managers about making sure I had a good WLB. They too grew up fiercely competitive considering some of them were CS grads from IITs
awesome to hear!! hopefully i can come to google one day!
Wait till you come across a desi client, god forbid in an executive role. The desi managers will feel like the best manager ever.

I worked with one. A C level guy, the way he spoke back was super defensive and agitated. His behavior was different to Indians vs non-indians in my observation. Uncle type of guy (probably in his 50s)

You guys rock.. i never experienced this and one of my previous boss was Desi and was the best boss I ever had. Now as an SM, I believe I have a good followeship and folks wants to work on my projects / fi. Why I know this ?coz they reach out to me every time for project and FI and have them on my team as and when possible.. so please don’t make this ‘All Desi Managers’. Also I am 38 and definitely would not appreciate an analyst or consultant referring me uncle 🤣😂😉

While this is true , it is also true that Desi folks who report to such managers never say No. They wont stop responding to an email sent over the weekend rather expect the managers not to send one . The moment one starts pushing back for unreasonable requests, such managers think twice. My way of working - I can’t control what others do but I can control what I do .
actually, i dont reply. i dont wake up for a 5AM phone call. i dont do more than what i feel is necessary. I sill complete all of the work, and its on time. its the fake sense of urgency indian managers have for every little thing that drives me insane
Sending a few emails over the weekend is not the end of the world. Stop blowing things out of proportion just because you cannot say no. Also why do you thhink they are paid any less and how does it factor into your argument or lack thereof. I have partners, sm's etc who email things over the weekend if things need to happen on Monday and none of them are Indian.
hhahahahhahaha Manager 2 - please, dont get offended. i never talked about how much they get paid. and once in a while sending an email over the weekend is totally cool. im talking 24/7 that i (and many others) have an issue with. im saying that it is not at all necessary to over stress yourselves on the weekend. seriously. our work isnt life threatening.
Indian managers are some of the most chill people I have worked with lol. Maybe it’s just a Deloitte thing 😅
Loool. Maybe.

Ok OP
India managers ( not all) also treat us citizen associates in a better way because they are scared of serious push backs. They take associates on visa for granted because of visa situation

Exactly why the visa program needs serious reform
