Wow, from the sounds of this post, you care a lot more about your staff than any manager I’ve ever worked for. It also sounds like you might be being taken advantage of by some of your employees. Maybe some stricter boundaries and hard and fast rules about calling off or leaving early.
I am right there with you and I don't think there is an end in sight. I have been thinking about leaving retail beccause I don't know how much longer I can do it. We are chronically understaffed and it really affects me.

Yeah it’s really hard. You have to treat your staff well or they can call it quits when it’s super busy. That balance between boundaries and being stepped all over is hard.

Oh yeah I used to bend over all the time for the staff whatever they want! Then I realised I wasn't getting anything back. Soon I got my staff into a better position, one that respected the joband the efforts and it works so nicely there's a good balance. But it took a long time to get here.j

Sounds like the associates are taking advantage, I would start performance managing the time and attendance and start hiring people that actually want to be there and work
