There's no use worrying about tomorrow. Are you actually going to get more work done tonight or are you going to get started on it tomorrow? If it's the latter (and it almost always can/should be), then worrying about it now does literally nothing for no one. And this applies to the expectation of future work too; what good is constantly being on edge expecting an email going to do? If you get an email that requires immediate action, then take action when you get it. Living in constant anticipation of the next email is not healthy.
It's ok to make little plans in your head on a Sunday night; first thing tomorrow morning, I want to hit X, Y, and Z. But it sounds like your "constant state of low-grade panic" is living in constant anticipation of what could be instead of responding to what is. And if your boss is constantly sending you emails at random times at night expecting an immediate response outside of an imminent deadline (e.g., a motion is due tonight), try your best to find a better boss. Outside of imminent deadlines (which you should be aware of well in advance), pretty much everything can wait til morning.
Another example of the stress/anxiety “pandemic” created by the practice of law. 💔

I’ve been here and I used my energy to find a better job. I was at my last firm for only 7 months before going in house, I started looking for a new role at 4 months in and landed an amazing 9-5 that paid really well. When that started to suck after a couple years I moved again and am now even happier and making more money with great hours.
A “constant state of low-grade panic” is no way to live. This is especially true if you aren’t at a market-paying biglaw firm where at least you’re being compensated well for your misery. Seriously, start looking for a better exit and be discerning in your search. You have one life to live, don’t waste it suffering over a shitty job.
It’s kinda hard during the week and I’m always thinking about work. But I turn off email notifications on my phone so it’s not right there. I don’t check my email on the weekend. If it’s important enough (and it never is) someone will call me. I also try to keep my phone on my desk over the weekend as much as possible since I don’t really go in my office on the weekend. And I try to spend as much time as I can outside or go to a museum or something. Don’t just sit at home all weekend.
I set aside time to meditate daily. During that time, my notifications are off and my phone is on the other side of the room playing the guided meditation. I try to do other things, like walking and cycling, but if all I get to do is meditate at least I had 10-20 minutes alone where nothing could bother me.
This is so sad. Completely understand though and at least you’re doing something to make 10-20 minutes to switch off, but I think this just illustrates OP’s point. 10-20 minutes of switching off a day?! :(
I was where you are, for years longer than I’d like to admit. It is not normal, and not the way to live your life. Think about your personality, and if you would feel healthier at another job. If that’s the case, pursue it, it’s worth it to walk away from this one. If you are more like me, and realize that low-level anxiety may follow you, talk to a doctor about medication to manage the anxiety. Once I got past what I concede were unhelpful feelings that I was supposed to just toughen up and be strong, I started on medication. Even a low dose was life changing. I’m still at the job that used to make me sick on the daily, and now it’s just a job, not my nightmare. I don’t know what path will be right for you, but staying at this job in this state of constant anxiety is not it. I hope you pursue and find a peaceful path, wherever that leads you. Good luck.
This sounds more like a you problem though

I have a challenging job but it’s mostly 9-5 and pays really well. But I left shitty jobs in the past to get here. This job isn’t worth your mental health and we should all be trying to build a career that works for us. If you’re in a panic daily due to work, it’s your body telling you you’re not where you should be and that you need to change.
You need to step away, take some time for you. You are going to crash and burn very quickly! As in, enjoy the weekend, don't think about work.
I had lunch today with two other partners in my firm and I mentioned this email and they both agreed that in our case we look forward to going to work. I don’t know if it’s the atmosphere in the firm or what but I certainly never am afraid or don’t want to go to work.
