I’ve applied for a managing in-house position w/ private company. Pay range 125-140 but I told recruiter that was too low given responsibilities and position. She replied (con’t in comments)

You need to figure out what you want your total compensation number to be and then back into it from there by maxing out base, factoring in bonus, and then using equity to fill in the gap to reach your ideal tc. What your ideal tc should be depends in large part on the geography, type of company, industry, and the role. What is the industry and geography of this company?

Thank you!!

If you’re senior enough to almost make partner, this seems very low and even wiggle room may not get you there unless this is a dream job regardless of pay. If not, I’d hold out and find another opportunity.

Great perspective. Thank you.

That seems really low. In-house counsel range (non managing) for a large company in my mind is 135k to 250k base. I’d imagine managing should be more than that.

like

This seems pretty low… given your level of experience I can’t imagine you couldn’t find a higher paying job so only take this if there are other compelling justifications

like

Different industry, but I’m not even the managing attorney at my private company and my total comp is more than double that. If you’re almost a partner you can find a better in-house role. That kind of comp is for a junior person switching in-house, particularly in a HCOL area

like

Continued: recruiter (unaffiliated with company) replied that there is “wiggle room and ability to get creative.” What do you think is fair for “wiggle room” and sign on or any other negotiations? 10-15% bonus but not guaranteed. FWIW, I would definitely like to go in-house. I’ll be a non-equity partner in January. I’m at law firm currently. I don’t want to lowball myself. Looking for any advice because I’m wading into uncharted waters. Thanks!

like

That seems incredibly low to me. That’s non-profit level salary.

like

Different industry and location but this feels very very low TBH. They should be comparing with NEP level at your current place - not your current salary - and aiming for that (even if they fall short). If you take this much of a paycut, you’ll be stuck with it for every move after this…

like

Counsel 4 - interesting take on partnership. I would have thought the opposite. Thank you.

Different industry, 2 years licensed and my comp is that range in-house. Don’t sell yourself short…

like

Thank you for sharing.

What do you mean by managing in house?

And, no one has to know your salary but you. Future jobs you’ll just name the range you want. Taking a lower salary won’t hold you back if it’s a job that will look good

like

Did you tell her/them your current comp upfront?

Yeah - “I’d be open to small paycut”; “OK, how about 30%+ cut” is not a legit conversation…..

Update: small pay cut meaning if they’re even able to get there. I still don’t know what creative and wiggle room means…will they tell recruiter the updated budget? I feel like I’m shooting in the dark now.

Counsel 2 - thank you! Great advice again.

Counsel 4 - excellent insight. TY.

Considering joining a small 50-person company as the only attorney (prior attorney is retiring). (I am currently in-house at a F50). For others who have done the same path, what surprises did you have when moving from a large company to a small one?

For example, it sounds like I should not expect a document management system, based on a prior post in this bowl. I’m guessing expenses like state bar fees and cell phone are not reimbursed.

Any advice on things to expect (or not expect)?

Currently working on a three person team in a larger GC group. I lateraled from a different group that did not pay attorneys on an attorney scale. I’m stuck in my old pay scale but have gotten promotions and raises quickly with more on the horizon. A recruiter reached out with a new role for 2-2.5x more than I currently make doing something similar. I love my company and the people I work with but the money isn’t there.
