I’m in that exact scenario, I’ve lived in Tacoma for 32 years and commuted to Seattle and East Side for 28. 90 mins door to door if you take the Sounder train (flexible schedule a must), the time is hard until you compare it to many commute times when your just 20mins from downtown seattle, your not saving much time living closer. You can also work the entire ride, good climate control and tables. You’re going to pay a LOT more for real estate north of pierce county, and forget having a yard if that’s important. My $600k house would sell for over a million in the East side as I’ve got an 11,000sq ft lot.
Crime? It’s everywhere, there are good quiet pockets in Tacoma, and bad ones just like up north.
Traffic? Our rush hour is laughable compared to going ANYWHERE at any time up north, like almost non-existent.
Food? It’s awesome down here, and CHEAPER TOO.
Do your own research, and I can assure you you’re gonna get a lot of Manager 1’s telling you no!
And I love the Tacoma Comedy Club!
I tend to prefer doing things in Tacoma vs. Seattle, honestly.

Don’t move to Tacoma lol
I just bought a house with my wife in Tacoma (north end). We were looking in Seattle but it was just too expensive. We also wanted a craftsman single family home that we realistically would’ve never been able to afford up north. I work remotely and go in maybe once a month or even two months so doesn’t bother me. My wife goes in once a week and the day she goes up is normally a long day. Leaves Tacoma around 5:30a to avoid traffic and doesn’t leave Seattle until after 7p. Longer work day but that is her productive day where she makes up work. Other days she’ll sign off earlier to compensate. Overall, we are loving Tacoma and are very happy to be here.
My main thing is if you are commuting more than twice a week then you might want to reconsider. I think that could be a drag eventually.
Thank you everyone for the advice and repsonses!
There are a lot of great places to live in and around the Tacoma area. I commute from Edgewood (just outside of Tacoma) and it takes me about an hour on average to commute 1x/wk to Seattle.
I live in Tacoma and work flexibly. Mostly from home but go into the Seattle office a few times a month for meetings. It’s not a super fun trek but especially if you have a routine, it’s fine. It’s worth it to me. You have options via Sounder or bus lines that are largely full of quiet commuters. My bus commute is usually ~50mins to just over an hour from the Dome to downtown Seattle in fairly peak periods (leaving 7:30-9:00am).
Many of my neighbors periodically work in their Seattle offices and sometimes carpool or pick our city days together.
