I've been stuck in a pure maintenance cycle for six months, and I'm starting to feel like a script-runner instead of an engineer. I'm trying to move into a senior-level job, and I worry about stagnating, but I'm not sure what to do. Is this a common issue with engineers who hope to level up?

Maintenance cycle in something you made? Your company may see you as too valuable maintaining your product vs moving up, you’ll need to voice frustration or apply outside

From a lead engineer's perspective, maintenance work is not a career killer. In fact, understanding legacy systems is often what separates experienced engineers from newer ones. What matters is whether you're learning, making decisions, and improving things along the way. If every task feels like following a script, that's a signal to start seeking opportunities where you can influence the architecture, process, or direction of the work.

Keep at it
