You only have four more months to go. I would begin to explore other opportunities, but definitely hang in there for four more months.
In that time, continue to Learn as much as you can because every place has things you can learn from even if they’re the negative things. Further build your resume. Generally speaking, it may not look good to be at someplace less than a year.
And just a reminder (that we all need from time to time) that life is 10% what happens to us and 90% how we respond to it.
If you can, invest the money that you got as a signing bonus. And then look at the next four months as an investment in your future in different fashions.
Four months goes by pretty quickly . In the meantime, you can plan for what comes next.
Look for another role, put the sign on bonus in a HYSA if you can. The promotion will make you happy for a month but the management and expectations will only increase.
Anything internally you can switch too? That may also help.
Find something else to do before you find yourself in a position that always requires you to have to adjust your life, or when youseek transfer or seek a new position that gets delayed or denied based on their staffing level needs and what strong points they can use you for or still need you for. Ever heard of that saying "all money ain't good money?" Believe it, when it comes to promotions. If you have to cover positions within your previous classification -NO. If you have to wait some preset time for a time of promotion-NO. If your boss wants you to do the assignments of 3 people and expects that consistently -NO. If the pay rate is less than your predecessor -NO. If the scheduling for the same position gets changed from the sweet deal your predecessor had- NO. If you have to start work before you start work because of long time staffing shortages consistently -NO. If the promotion is a token promotion (e.g woman, gay black) -NO.
Look for something else. And unless you have that promise of a promo in writing, don’t expect it.
I’m relatively new to the professional scene in the USA, is it acceptable here to ask for a written promise about promotions ? How do you go about asking for that ?
A year is really not that much time. Goes by quick. If it was lot of money, I would stick it out. But there are some alternate options:
If you happen to find an offer outside, you can ask them to offer a sign bonus also, which would essentially buy you out.
OR,
If you get an offer elsewhere and the salary is much higher, you may be able to just afford to pay your current company back at that point. But you’d have to calculate and see if it’s worth it.
If you don’t get either of the above scenarios, then best to just stick it out. You don’t want to go into debt for this.
